A personal tribute to my mother from Mary H. Hill.
Virginia B. Mazzocco was born to Italian immigrants 21 June 1931 and with her younger brother Robert S., who succeeds her, her family settled in southern California.  Humbly revealing how as a young girl she tried to avoid learning how to create her mother's special dishes, as an adult she treated her friends and family to delicious authentic cooking and warm hospitality. In addition to modeling she patiently guided my education learning broad life skills.  After graduating from high school she acquired secretarial skills through various job opportunities, proudly advising me how she assisted my father attain his graduate degree and waiting until after my university graduation to admit her personal dislike of school.  She met my father Robert C. Hug at the beach, eloped and then reconciled with her parents, and raised 3 happy children while pursuing adventures and career across the USA and Europe.  Combining her secretarial experience with fastidiousness and quiet pleasant efficiency she achieved the level of  executive assistant in the Federal Government.  Her career was nearly derailed by a low speed auto accident in 1975 resulting in a subdural hematoma that required emergency surgery and a stormy hospitalization.  With compliant tough determination she beat the residual aphasia.  After a 30+ year marriage she divorced, retired from a 40 year work career, and resettled in Valencia, California.  She transitioned briefly with a data entry position at Magic Mountain, but in love and support for her family she dedicated her time and attention to 2 of her 4 grandchildren who lived in her neighborhood.  Contented with a slower pace of life and surrounded by a loving community she battled chronic medical conditions and hospitalizations until age related dementia created a dependent condition that she valiantly minimized until her death 5 December 2022.  My mother was an easy person to love.
