Funeral services will be held 2:00pm – 3pm Thursday May 5, 2022 at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, Monarch Chapel, 23287 Sierra Hwy, Newhall, CA 91321 with Minister Cecilio Miguel of the Jehovah Witnesses, officiating. Burial will follow at Eternal Valley Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Eternal Valley Memorial Park.
Bill, as he liked to be referred, was born in Beckley, West Virginia to Nannie Simona Hughes and Nathaniel James Hoston on December 15, 1930. He went to school at Stratton High School. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He graduated from University of Michigan; then moved to California, where he met and fell in love with Joyce Washington. They were married on November 26, 1953 in Los Angeles. Bill’s strong communication skills enabled him to be a successful entertainment representative, Frank Sinatra Enterprises, and salesman, Equitable Life Insurance. Additionally, those same skills lead him to become the Executive Producer and Host of a syndicated cable talk show called “Trust Me” and the Publisher of the oldest African American newspaper in the United States, the California Eagle. He worked with his long-time friend, William A. Burke, on a new project of his called the “City of Los Angeles Marathon” which would become historic. Bill’s dedication to friends allowed him to develop strong relationships in the political arena where he worked on variety of election campaigns including the election of Yvonne Brathwaite Burke for Los Angeles County Supervisorial District 2. Then in 1993 he found his niche as the Chairman/President/CEO of the Transportation Foundation of Los Angeles (TFLA). There he received great recognition and obtained numerous awards. One of Mr. Hoston’s greatest successes was the TFLA Real Time Internship Program (RTIP) (1993) which still exist today. Over 94% of RTIP student interns receive permanent positions as a direct result of their real time experience. Always seeking more, Bill became the California Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve Chairman (CAESGR) from 2004- 2006. ESGR, a Department of Defense program, established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment. In this position, Mr. Hoston received a great deal of recognition and awards, including the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service (2006).
William J. Hoston is preceded in death by (Mother: Nannie Simona Hoston; Father: William Nathaniel Hoston, former wife Joyce Hoston (Giles) and Sister: Nepotry Motley.
Bill is survived by Sister: Verneil Scott: Sons: William (Christina) and Rodney (Antonia); 6 Grandchildren: Danisha, Stephanie, Alexandria. Nathaniel, Ryan and Isaiah; 4 great-Grandchildren: Devan, Roman, Kiyah and Elyse who was just born within the last week!).
