Born on February 27, 2008, Mekkai was raised in Newton, New Jersey, where he lived with his family until moving to Montague in 2021. A junior at High Point Regional High School in Sussex, New Jersey, Mekkai brought bright energy to the days of those around him and left an imprint that will be felt for a long time to come.
He had a personality that was easy to recognize and even easier to remember. Mekkai could make people laugh, lighten a room, and remind friends and family, often without trying, that love is shown in the everyday moments. His humor and warmth touched many lives throughout his community.
Athletic and driven, Mekkai threw himself into the things he loved. He enjoyed skateboarding and weightlifting, and he was proud to be part of High Point’s track team, running the 100-meter dash. Ever the competitor, Mekkai ran a personal best time of 11.95 seconds in his sophomore year, an achievement that deserved to be celebrated.
At home and with friends, Mekkai’s curiosity and enthusiasm shone through in the worlds he enjoyed exploring. He was an avid gamer who also loved anime, Beyblades, and Pokémon. He had a special excitement for cars, finding satisfaction in the details and thrill in the idea of what could be built, driven, and admired.
Mekkai is survived by his father and step-mother, Jean and Betty Fontus; his mother, Martha Nystrand; his guardian, Adrianne Smith; his siblings, Athaliah Fontus, Kaylee Oquendo, Quentin Rodriguez, Savannah Oquendo, Jayce Smith, Arianna Monteleone, Jahnya Davis, Jaiden, Marcus, and Noah; and his grandmothers, Clementine Fontus and Helen Stratigis (his Yia Yia).
Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church of Newton, 111 Ryerson Ave, Newton, New Jersey 07860, on May 23, 2026, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will follow in the Main Chapel at 1:00 pm at the same location.
Though his years were far too few, Mekkai’s life was full—full of movement, laughter, loyalty, and love. His memory will be carried forward in the stories shared, the smiles sparked by remembering him, and the enduring bond of a family and community who will always hold him close.
