Robert G. Walker December 31, 1942 - February 15, 2021

It is with great sadness the family of Robert G. Walker of Hardyston, NJ, Stockton Springs, ME, and Osprey, FL, announces his passing after a brief illness.

Bob was born in Stoughton, Wisconsin, to Joseph S. Walker and Eleanor J. Reimer Walker, settling in NJ in 1961. He received his BA from Kean College and his MA from College of NJ. Bob went on to join Sussex VoTech as Assistant Principal, moving on in the same position at the opening of Kittatinny Regional High School. Rising through the ranks, Bob became Superintendent, a position he held for 23 years until his retirement in 2007. At this time, he was honored by having the new school wing formally dedicated as the Robert G. Walker Wing, ending his 33 year career at KRHS. During his tenure at KRHS Bob was instrumental in attaining NJ Star School Award followed by being named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Bob referred to all of his accomplishments as “we as a team” never as "I". In 1993 Bob was cited by The Executive Educator as one of the top 100 school executives in North America. In 2007 he was placed in the 110th Congressional Record, a citation honoring Mr. Walker for a "lifetime of public service as an educator."

A giving man, his professional memberships included, but not limited to, Executive Board member of SCARC, member of Sussex County Educational Services Commission, a 25 year member of National Association of Federally Impacted Schools (NAFIS), American Association of School Administrators, Sussex County Chamber of Commerce and Newton Rotary, of which he was a past president and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also President of RGW LLC.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Bob was always ready for his next adventure. He enjoyed downhill skiing, riding his Harley Davidson, a former member of The Blue Knights, traveling in his Winnebago, a life-long Green Bay Packers fan and season ticket holder.

Training at the age of 56, Bob completed both the San Diego Marathon with his daughter Kim then the NYC Marathon that same year.

A pro at all home repairs, no job was too big tirelessly renovating his homes and always ready to help others. Never one to walk away from a battle, Bob was known for his strong opinions and always up for a heated discussion on many topics. A friend and mentor to many and always eager to lend a hand. A compassionate animal lover and firm believer in rescuing.

In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and Douglas Walker; his wife, Rosemary Walker; and his grandson, River. The beloved husband and companion of 33 years to Susan Capelli Walker, Bob was a devoted father of Paul Walker (Elizabeth) of Acworth, GA, and daughters, Hope Medina of Groveland, FL, Kimberly Klokus (Michael) of Minneola, FL, and Marisa Daly (Patrick) of Boxford, MA. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, sister-in-law, Susan Walker of Alamo, KY and many friends, including Glenn Sumpman, all of whom already miss him dearly.

As Bob would not want to compromise anyone’s health, a Celebration of Life will be held in the spring.

Mr. Walker:
I am so very sorry to hear about your passing. You were such a good man. So kind and patient to put up with my loud mouth for days/nights on end enjoying my youth with Kimbone. I have such fond memories of spending time with you guys at “a beautiful shore rental.”I adored you and our sarcastic commentary.

I met Bob when I was a teacher at Kittatinny and he was the Superintendent. My first impression of him has survived over 20 years of friendship: He was one of the most authentic people I have ever known. He could be rough around the edges, yet he was the school leader who would be out driving at 3 am, checking for black-ice on the roads before deciding to call a snow-day. Bob cared deeply about KRHS and for all the people who learned and worked there. I was teaching at Kittatinny on 9/11 and Bob led the charge for our school’s humanitarian response, by getting supplies to Ground Zero. He sincerely wanted to make a positive difference in the world and would act immediately whenever there was a need. Kittatinny was his magnum opus, and he was an educational leader who inspired learning, a spirit of adventure, and most of all, who gave children hope for the future. He gave us all hope.

My most heartfelt condolences to Bob’s wife, Susan, his children, and his grandchildren. May the wonderful memories of your loved-one give you comfort in this difficult time. God bless you all.

My deepest sympathy to Bob's family. I got to know Bob as a colleague during the 13 years I was the superintendent at Hampton Township School, a sending district to KRHS. Bob was an educational leader in his position at Kittitanny and led the staff to always strive toward excellence. I am grateful for the times I shared his company. His memory will live on in all of us who had the opportunity to be with Bob during his lifetime.

Bob was always a cheerleader for Kittatinny, but more importantly he was a forward thinking man who always planned for the next advancement in education. His dedication to the school, his students and teachers was always forefront in his thinking. Most importantly, Bob was extremely proud of his family and would share his love and successes with us. He wanted the best and as a result, you would give him your best. When in a difficult situation, you always wanted Bob at your back because his support was unconditional when it came to KRHS and what was best for the school community.

My deepest sympathies to his family.

I had the privilege of working with Bob when we opened Kittatinny.
We spent over forty special years together as colleagues and friends. Bob devoted his life to his family and extended KRHS family. He worked tirelessly to make KRHS an outstanding school. Bob confronted difficult issues and would fight for what was right. You could always count on Bob to help out any group or person in need exemplified by the schools initiative during the 9/11 disaster. Bob personified the Cougar Spirit.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Sue and the family during this difficult time.

As Superintendent of Sparta Schools it was my good fortune to work with outstanding educators. Bob Walker was clearly one. His commitment to quality education, his concern for students and his many contributions to the community were well known. His smile and quick wit delighted his colleagues and friends.
My sympathy goes out to his family during this difficult time.

On behalf of Newton Rotary and its members we extend condolences to Bob's family. Bob was a long time member of Newton Rotary as well as Paul Harris Fellow and Past President. We all recognize his efforts in the education field and know how tirelessly he worked as Supt of Kittatinny High School. He was the face of the school for many years and many many students have benefitted from his leadership. Above all Bob was a man of good character and a friend to all. He will be missed as will his wit and wisdom. Go in peace Bob and thank you!
