Doug was the boy next door, 4 years my senior and a very protective presence in my life. He was special, he had a band, which practiced O Charlena endlessly before it was finally recorded.  He had a white Samoyed which had an unfortunate encounter with a can of red paint.  He had a monkey.  He had a convertible. And music
When he and Ann were first married, I think they also lived next door with his amazing Mom.
5 years after his death, I learned so much about his life, his success, his family and the positive impact he had on so many lives. My recollections are not of the successful businessman he became, but of a thoughtful teenager, who deterred bullies, merely by his presence.  My belated, but sincere sympathies to Ann and their family

Doug thank you for your belief in me when A&M hired me. You took me under your wing and helped me to forge a career. This wide eyed kid from Niagara Falls owes you for your years of experience. Your love of music was felt by many. You were awesome.

News travels slow down the QEW parking lot to Dundas. I just found out about Doug's passing. He was such a breath of fresh air in the music business and a straight shooter to boot. It was obvious how he loved his job and most everything that went with it. Just before my father died I asked him what losing his father was like. He replied - "It was like having an education thrust upon you of learning to love in absence after the luxury of loving in presence."  And so to Doug's long standing soul mate and children I wish you well on that journey. The love remains. He will have a wonderful and joyous place in my memory.

I last saw Ann and Doug at a mutual friend’s memorial 20 years ago or so. Seated at our table were Gerry Lacoursiere, Joe Summers, Jim Monaco ... I think  Brian Chater   ... lots of memories of my years as an artist with A&M ... neither Ann or Doug had aged a day since we had met back in 1976. My sincerest condolences to the Chappell family. It saddened me to hear of Doug's recent passing. I had known  Doug through the relationship of MCA Records and Island Records  in the 80's/90's. A great guy!

To Ann, Lori and all in Doug’s family, my condolences to you. It was very sad news indeed to hear that Doug had passed away.  Very few in this business had the passion that Doug had for the music and especially when it came to championing Canadian music. Myself, Ed, Rick and The Northern Pikes all benefited from Doug’s passion because, he signed the band and changed the course of our lives for the better and for that I’m so incredibly grateful.  I will never forget when Doug and I flew over to London to meet everyone at Virgin to talk up the band. Doug was a master at getting everyone on board, for a young manager like myself at the time, to have Doug in your corner was truly a blessing.  Doug will truly be missed!

It’s hard to recall a time when Doug wasn’t a respected and much-loved presence in the music business going back to his days at A&M Records in the early ‘70s when, for some of us, the people in that company became family for a time. (I took that to the extreme in marrying one of Doug’s colleagues.) It was here that Doug’s canny ear for talent and his infectious and persuasive enthusiasm for any project he took on first became evident and were an on-going hallmark of his remarkable career in the recording business. I had my first brief brush with pop-star Doug in the old neighbourhood in which we both lived. My connection to the music world in those days was simply as a loyal listener to Toronto radio station CHUM and avid watcher of their chart, the one on which Richie Knight and the Mid-Knights had their #1 hit “Charlena” in 1963. I was about to become a page at the Ontario Parliament Buildings before entering my first year at York Memorial Collegiate Institute (YMCI). Doug (and George Semkiw of the Mid-Knights) were alumni of the same school but had already graduated and moved on before I arrived. That first encounter with Doug was not a good one. In fact, he pissed me off along with the other kids playing ball hockey on an absolutely perfect expanse of asphalt at the back of an apartment building on Trethewey Drive, in the Eglinton and Keele area of Toronto. It was the home of a young woman of considerable beauty by the name of Ann Neely (the future Mrs. Chappell) and on this day of infamy, Mr. C came a-courtin’ and parked his salmon pink convertible with off-white interior and black guitar case on the back seat, right in the middle of play at a vital time in a pivotal playoff game causing us to abandon it. Sure, we could have got up to some mischief with his spiffy automobile, no doubt one of the perks arising from the success that his band was enjoying at the time, but we were hardly the Bowery Boys. I had occasion to needle him with that story a number of times in later years. After Doug retired from the music business, he became our “Commish,” short for Commissioner, as co-founder of the Rockers Fantasy Hockey League, which was participated in by members of the music community here and in the U.S. Given his organizational skills and attention to detail, we couldn’t have had a better administrator for what, for many of us, was a welcome entertainment and distraction through the winter months. Draft day in early October, often held at Live Nation headquarters in Toronto, involved not only player selection, but also a swapping of some of the most outrageous in-stories from the music biz the previous year, a lot of laughter and dinner at a local restaurant later. Just one of the poignant memories of Doug that linger for many of us.

So sorry to hear the news of Doug's passing.  Such a passionate man.

Doug was like a brother to me and I will miss him dearly.

 Doug and I go back a long way to the early 60's when he recruited me to become the keyboard/organ player for Richie Knight and the Mid-Knights. As a young musician this was an opportunity to work with a bunch of great guys and become a part of the growing Toronto music scene.

Over the following years we all became family and experienced great memories along the way that will never be forgotten

Doug lived and loved his life and became one of the most influential giants in the Canadian music industry. From his time with A&M to Polydor to Virgin Records, he was instrumental in paving the way for countless Canadian acts.

Doug was inspiration to all of us who had the privilege to spend time with him

I still do not have the words.
I met Doug and Ann when I was 16. Chris and I have been friends since, Chris has been my best friend through all these years. 
Doug has had effects on me he didn't even know about. (ex. Doug would not put up with anyone roaring up to the house music blaring. To this day I still turn my music down near people I know, even when its not loud.)
You see Doug and Ann didn't treat you like a kid, respect given was returned. I was told Mr. Chappell was not acceptable. I'm Doug. 
The spark between Ann and Doug was bright, and bright to anyone who knew them.  I enjoyed being with them ( even without Chris) ...... you know what I mean. 
My interactions with Doug were random over the years, but as mentioned by others, it was like picking up like no time had passed.
They say a good life is when you touch others. 
Great life Doug! 
I will miss your smile, laugh and everything else you brought.

Doug, thank you for the support and belief that you showed to me, from the start of my career in Canada with “Far Beyond These Castle Walls”, “Spanish Train and Other Stories” and throughout  the wonderful years of A and M Canada. Not only for that, but also thank you for your friendship to a young man who was in your fantastic country for the first time... you and Ann invited me into your home for Barbecues and fun, music and laughter. I am sure you can tell, wherever you are now, from the outpouring of grief and respect, that you are so much loved and will be greatly missed by your family, friends such as JP, Lorna and many, many others. “Go with love upon your journey...”

Bonnie and I visited Doug and Ann in Niagara Falls summer before last, and it was a special day we'll always remember.  Doug and I bonded over the last year as we both had various health problems and our conversations were a hoot...well ya know two guys in their 70's can do some pretty serious bitching.

I was so saddened to hear about Doug's passing. Doug was a tremendous music guy and label head. I remember vividly his time at Virgin, his bursting enthusiasm for his artists and their music and the impact he made with Virgin's domestic roster including Rita MacNeil, Northern Pikes, and Colin James... personally visiting stations for support when he launched Hands Up, signing One on the basis of their inclusion in a CFNY New Music Search disc, and holding court in command of the great team he built at the Jarvis Street HQ. My deepest and most sincere condolences to the Chappell family.

Very sad about Doug's passing and the tremendous loss to the Chappell family and so many others. Doug was my boss for my first five years at A&M and later at PolyGram. I always felt that he had my back. RIP.

I was lucky enough to work with him for a few years at EMI when he helmed Virgin Records and he was a generous man, kind, considerate, smart and humble. Always had a smile and friendly words for everyone. He always left you feeling good about yourself and the path ahead. A great sense of humour and one who inspired others to do their best. A towering figure, a heart of gold and a reputation of being an honest broker of worthy talent. I recall the A&M days when Doug and his team arrived at radio bearing gifts of wonderful music with no hype.  Whenever and wherever I would run into Doug over the years,  it was always as if we had just left off the conversation yesterday. Condolences to his family. We have all lost a treasure of a man.

Ann; Needless to say, I am so saddened by the news of Doug's passing but buoyed by an avalanche of memories entwined with the great music he was so happy to share with us. Of course, my memories pale in comparison to the legacy of love that you both created. He will always be nearby.

This is such shocking and sad news. My deepest sympathy to Ann, his family and to all his many friends in our industry. We have lost a truly great champion for Canadian music.  I first met Doug when I worked at CJAY in Calgary when he was on one of his infamous western promo tours with A&M. That was back in the 70’s and we’ve stayed in touch ever since.  When I came to Toronto to work for CHUM, it was Doug that “gently” convinced me to join he and Ann to see Rita MacNeil at Roy Thompson Hall, trying to get radio to hear this great talent.  Enough said. Job done. He was a passionate and caring person who always had time for you. I always looked forward to catching up with Doug each year, usually at the annual Radio & Records summer party event in Toronto.  He will be greatly missed, but always in our hearts.

When he joined the Mid-Knights, I knew we had a great bass player and over the next few year we all grew together and became a band of brothers. he brought a lot of knowledge to the band and was a great joker. Had a fantastic hang out with Doug in his basement once. He told me about the rise of Richie Knight and the Mid-Knights, about the many artists he had worked with (who he had nothing but good things to say about) , and told some great behind the scenes stories about the music business that every one of us love so much. Such very sad news. My thoughts go out to his family and many friends. Doug represents the very best of a groundbreaking era in Canadian music history that helped set up the unstoppable momentum it has enjoyed since the new millennium. A record executive that fully understood, lived and breathed music. Doug was a 'promo-supremo' in the Canadian record business. He created that lasting and deserved reputation from the very start, with his belief in the records he was promoting and his warm, sincere but unrelenting approach to breaking artists. My friendship and admiration of Doug, both for his achievements and for his persona, started 50+ years ago with the launch of A&M Records Canada - what was to become the infamous Gerry, Joe & Doug show. Their very first Canadian release, which I was fortunate to publish, was "Band Bandit" by Tundra. Doug got that record aired nationally and into the top 30 at a time when getting primetime airplay on Canadian artists was not easy to say the least. 
It was the first of several other times over all these years that we got to work together.
Since his retirement, I would look forward to seeing Doug at King Biscuit Boy tribute events, reformed Crowbar performances and the annual Radio & Records parties. He will be greatly missed by so many of us. Frank Davies

Dawn & I were devastated at “Dougie’s” passing. He not only was a colleague of mine for 45 years , but he and his lovely wife Ann were our great friends, with whom we shared many wonderful moments together  over the years. We were so fortunate to have spent some brief time, socially distancing as required, with Dougie and Ann  in November of this year. I was so sad to hear that we lost our good friend Doug Chappell who signed The Pikes to Virgin records on December 18, 1986 a night we will never forget. 
Our lives changed after we met Doug, he truly believed in our music & he left us to record our songs the way we wanted. 
He was one of us, a musician & a true lover of music. 
I remember picking Doug up at the Boston airport in August of 1992 when he came to visit while we were recording Neptune at Blue Jay Studio in Carlisle, MA. The first thing he did once he got settled at the studio was grab the rough mixes from a DAT tape, plugged in his headphones & immediately began to smile, a moment I will always remember. 
He will surely be missed by his family & the many friends he had in the music business.

I was fortunate to be an extended part of the family, and it was a family, during Virgin’s days on Park Road and early days on Jarvis. The high-achieving team was led by Doug, who made it a really fun experience. The weekends away and Christmas parties were legendary, and the team loved its leader and would run through a wall for Doug. In fact, he was respected, admired and loved by the entire music industry. Doug Chappell was one of the nicest men I have ever met and had the pleasure of working with. I last saw him at Deane’s funeral. I walked up to him and gave him a kiss.  We had a lovely chat for a few moments and then went our separate ways. When I saw Doug last he looked happy and healthy and I will be sure to remember him this way. He was always a gentleman to me. He was gorgeously handsome (aka the silver fox!) and kind and more than anything, he will be missed by soooOoo many.  My deepest condolences to Ann and Lori and the rest of the family.  I am so sorry for your loss.  🕊

Mrs Chappell, we were all blessed to have known him. we called him Coach or just Dougie. He was loved as are you, I think he's now with my Beautiful Mom having a glass of wine, talking about how much they loved us all.

This is tragic... Doug was a wonderful friend. I learned a lot about the record business from him and spent a ton of time together at his office and even his home.  Back in the day he loved his intellivision baseball, his pool, playing tunes and entertaining. When my wife and I eloped to Hawaii he threw us a reception on our return  at his place  in Toronto with chicken wings brought in from Buffalo by Ken Bain and My late friend Steve Young. !!  So many memories and I almost got to see him last year but my hip and knee mobility issues prevented me from getting out.    My deepest sympathies to Ann and the family.  It is a very sad day today... R.I.P. old friend...

Our love goes out to the entire family.  Doug was really one “cool” dad that’s for sure.  He will be missed Love always
