Frederick James Downing

It is with hearts full of sadness that the family of Fred Downing announce his passing at the Bella Senior Care Centre on April 13, 2017, at the age of 95. Beloved husband and best friend of Margaret (nee Campbell). Cherished father of Joanne (Ken) Olsen and Richard (Joanne) Downing. Loving grandfather of Greg (Katy) Olsen, Kristen (Paul) Dallaire, Michelle (Derek) Howes, Richard (Taylor Curley) Downing and Colleen Downing. Special great grandfather of Kaitlyn, Kaili and Zoey. Fred is predeceased by his parents Arnold and Grace Downing, brother Richard (Jean) Downing and brother-in-law Bruce (Stella) Campbell.

Fred was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls. As a young man he attended NFCVI and returned to spend his 35 year career there as a teacher, helping to guide young on their paths to success. Fred was active in the community volunteering as a hockey and baseball coach. Throughout his life his love of playing the piano brought joy to him and delighted all his listeners. Family was most important to Fred. He loved surrounding himself by those who were special to him.

Family and friends will be received on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at HETHERINGTON & DEANS FUNERAL CHAPEL; 5176 Victoria Ave. (905-354-5614). A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel at 12:30 p.m. with interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery. In memory of Fred, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Society.
