Angelina (Lee) Walkowitz, 94, of Niantic, passed away September 20, 2021 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Angelina Josephine Cannizzaro was born January 31, 1927 in Groton, CT to Mauro and Jenny Cannizzaro. She is survived by her sister, Domenica Lipari; her brother, Patrick Cannizzaro; her nephews, John Cassidy (Boston, MA) and Tim Cassidy (Tolland, CT), and her niece, Jennifer Hunter (Niantic), the three of whom she raised in her home with her late husband, Chester, and her sister, Domenica; Nicholas and Benjamin, the children of John and his wife, Ann; Christopher James (CJ) and Brianna Lee, the children of Tim and his wife, Stephanie; and Trevor and Savannah, the children of Jennifer. At the time of her death, Angelina took great pride and joy in the first child of the next generation, Nick and his wife, Mikaela’s, two-year-old daughter Reese. She also leaves behind her niece, Kathleen Verilla of Manchester Village, NJ, who once lived with her; her cousin Carol Caulfield of Waterford, CT; and her dear friends, Ted and Janice Tetreault, of Manchester, VT, whom she considered family. Angelina is predeceased by her beloved husband, Chester, and her brothers Frank, Michael, Harry and John.
As a child, Angelina lived with her parents and siblings in Groton, CT, until they moved to Passaic, NJ. She attended school in Passaic and married Chester in 1948. A talented seamstress, she worked as an embroidery operator at Hewitt Manufacturing in Passaic and served as the State of NJ’s President of the Ladies Postal Auxiliary (Chester was a letter carrier). In 1981, Lee, Chester and the family moved into their newly built home in Niantic.
“Aunt Lee” never lectured, but led by example, exhibiting a selfless, caring and generous nature. Although her passing leaves a huge void in the hearts of the many she has touched, she lives on in the countless cherished memories and legacy of love carried by her family. With little formal education, Angelina was a voracious reader of books and consumer of news. She was a fierce advocate for the education of her family, as evidenced by the successful collegiate and professional careers of her great nephews and nieces, including the ongoing education of the two youngest (currently pursuing a PhD and a bachelor’s degree, respectively). This simple, quiet, proud and dignified woman continues to inspire her family, even in death.
Calling hours are TODAY from 12:00 – 2:00 in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Niantic, with the burial to immediately follow at Union Cemetery, which is less than a mile from the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please send any donations in memory of Angelina to the Veterans Administration at: https://www.volunteer.va.gov/apps/VolunteerNow/default.asp.
