She is predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Clifford G. Mattia and daughter-in-law Denise (Twitchell) Mattia.
Anna was born October 2, 1918 in Willimantic, CT to Costas and Helen (Bell) Stamaton, the middle daughter of three, Patricia Lamberton and Claire Grossomanides. They moved to Hartford, CT when she was 7 where her family opened the Park Street Restaurant, a candy and ice cream shop adjoining the Lyric Theater on Park Street in Hartford. Anna graduated from Bulkeley High School and worked in her family’s business until the birth of her first chid. She raised three children and worked part time as a banquet waitress, contributing hugely to the purchase of a beach cottage at Hawks Nest Beach, Old Lyme, CT where the family spent most of their summers.
She later worked at Covenant and Travelers Insurance companies. The family moved to Newington Ct in 1964 until 1988 when She and Cliff retired to a new home in Hawks Nest. They traveled, wintered in Florida and lived the American dream for many years. One of Mom’s best memories was traveling to Greece to see her ancestral family in Thessaloniki and ancestral home in Macedonia. Upon her husbands death in 2002 she remained at Hawk's Nest until the age of 93 when she surrendered her car keys and moved to Norwich, CT and was lovingly cared for by her daughter Carole.
She leaves three children; Ken Mattia and wife Bobbi, Al Mattia and wife Debbie and Carole Mattia-Slater and husband Rob. Also three grandchildren; Jeff Mattia and wife Karrie, Kevin Mattia and wife Michelle and Alexis Mattia, and five great-grandchildren; Josh, Nick, Zack, Addyson and Olivia and numerous nieces and nephews. She loved her cat, Sophia, and Carole's dog Roxie which provided many hours of comfort and entertainment.
Special thanks to close friends who assisted in her care in her later years, Cindy Angell, Shelby Clark and Stacy Ardel.
There will be an Open House in Anna’s honor at her condominium at 190 South Thames St., Unit 20 in Norwich on Sunday, January 29, 2017 from 12pm to 4pm.
Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Niantic is handling the arrangements.
