

Niantic- Judith “Judy” Bittner Zakutansky, known to her loved ones as Judy, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2023 in New London, Connecticut after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on February 17, 1959 in Buffalo, New York to Norman and June (Roehrig) Bittner.
Judy is survived by her devoted husband of 30 years Michael, loving son Paul, her brother Gerald (Patti) Bittner, father Norman Bittner, brother-in-law Philip (Susie) Zakutansky, nieces Christina (Caleb), Michelle, Laura, Rachel, and nephew Glenn. Judy was preceded in death by her mother June and her sister Mary.
Judy dedicated 35 years of her life to the US Coast Guard Academy. She started with the Cadet Musical Activities Department and then transferred to the Command Religious Program where she worked as the Executive Assistant for over 30 years. Her commitment and dedication to her work were unparalleled, and she will be remembered for her generosity, kindness, and caring nature.
Outside of her career, Judy had a passion for community involvement and youth development. She served as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader for 20 years. Judy was an avid Bingo player and bowler. She served as the team mom for many of her son Paul’s youth sports teams. She was known for her involvement with the East Lyme High School Marching Band, where she assisted with uniforms, fundraising and chaperoning. Judy also volunteered for over two decades with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
A celebration of her life will be held at the US Coast Guard Academy Leamy Hall Auditorium on Thursday, September 28, at 11 AM to honor and celebrate Judy’s life. Private burial to follow.
