

Edith Frances Courteaux passed away peacefully at her home on February 5, 2026. She is survived by her son Vernon Joseph Courteaux Jr., sister, Yvonne Montz, sister-in-law, Victoria Courteaux. She is also survived by her nephews Joseph Courteaux, Shane Fortenberry and nieces Melissa Courteaux and Toni Palmisano and adopted granddaughter Christian Lowe as well as a host of more nieces, nephews, and family members to cherish her memory.
Edith is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Courteaux, Sr., her parents Grover Delton Fortenberry and Oree Edith Fortenberry, siblings, Larry Dale Fortenberry, Doris Eileen Lozano, and her son Charlie Courteaux.
She was a public servant who worked as a police officer for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office and eventually retiring from the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office.
She also worked as personal security for the late Al Copeland in his home and also accompanying him and his family on many occasions and vacations. One notable trip was to Lake Tahoe where she learned to ski alongside the family.
She was also a very creative artist. She was accomplished at cross stitching, painting, ornamental plastering, home decor, sewing and landscaping.
She owned 5 separate homes during her life with the first being acquired with her first husband Vernon Courteaux. The remaining homes she bought on her own working as a police officer day and night and doing detail work all while being a single mother.
She has touched many peoples lives and even befriending people she met while booking them into correction facilities and helping to turn their lives around.
She was a loving proud mother, strict and supportive. Always open and honest. Always able to take time to listen. She loved to talk and laugh and was well known for expressing herself fully and truthfully. She respected all people equally who gave her equal respect no matter their status in life, race, religion or gender.
She will be missed, loved and never forgotten. She was one of a kind and helped many people along her journey of life.
Visitation will be held at H.C. Alexander Funeral Home in Norco, LA on Friday, February 13, 2026, at 10AM, Funeral service at 11AM with burial to follow at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Destrehan, LA.
