

In the early hours of December 5, 2011, Alvin “Jimmy” M. Brantly, 77, went to be with the Lord. He was born on September 29, 1934 in Norfolk, Virginia, the son of the late Frank and Helen Brantly. Jimmy joined the United States Air Force out of high school and served his country for 4 years. After his military service as an aircraft mechanic, Jimmy came home and entered the apprenticeship program at N.A.R.F; he eventually retired with 30 years of service as an Electronic Mechanic General Foreman. Jimmy enjoyed reading, music, watching golf on TV and was an avid coin collector. He was a Mr. Fixit kind of guy and took great pleasure in taking cars apart and putting them back together. Jimmy’s greatest joy was his roll as husband, Pop, Grand Papa, Great Grand Papa and friend. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Jimmy was preceded in death by his son, James Allen Brantly.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 56 years, Margaret Brantly; sons, Tim Brantly and Rob Brantly; grandchildren, Tyler Brantly, Kacie Poole, Morgan Brantly, Taylor Brantly, Hannah Brantly, Kayla Osterholm and Bradley Crumpler; great-grandchildren Jayden Poole, Jameson Poole and Aiyanna Gonzalez; brother, Howard Brantly; sister, Betty Mason; and numerous other loving family and friends.
The family will receive friends Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 from 7:00-8:30 PM in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, 818 Norview Avenue. A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the funeral home by Dr. Steve Jolly of Freemason Street Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association, local S.P.C.A. or charity of your choice in Jimmy’s name.
