Barbara Bruckner Voelkel

Norfolk - Barbara Rose Bruckner Voelkel, 70, passed away Nov. 27, 2015. Born Jan 4, 1945 in Bronx, NY to the late Joseph and Dorothy Bruckner, Barbara entered the world with her dancing shoes on and her singing voice poised. She was a lover of music, race-car driving, road-trip adventures, and genealogy. Barbara had bachelor’s degrees in both mathematics and nuclear engineering. She worked as a computer programmer and was a proud Navy wife. Mrs. Voelkel was active in the American Parkinson’s Disease Association of Hampton Roads, where she was a past president and vice president.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ron Voelkel; sons, Ronald J. Voelkel and Matthew C. Voelkel; daughters, Heidi Berger and Susan Voelkel; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Elona Bruckner.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015 at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. A mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015 at the Church of St. Therese, 4137 Portsmouth Blvd. Chesapeake, VA 23321. Burial will be held 12:00 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015 at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veteran’s Cemetery in Suffolk.
The family invites people attending the interment to a reception immediately following at Gianna's Pizzeria, 7386 Habour Towne Parkway (Harbour View) Suffolk, VA 23435. Please make sure you notify the family if you plan to attend.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to American Parkinson’s Disease Association – Hampton Roads (APDA-HR). You may offer condolences to the family at www.smithandwilliamsnorfolk.com.
