Carolyn Millner Kinney, born in Lynchburg, VA to William Lawson and Audrey Millner, passed away peacefully at the age of 80, on Saturday, January 14, 2023, in Virginia Beach, VA. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ronnie Millner (Loretta).
Know by many as determined and stubborn however compassionate and so full of life; she genuinely cared for everyone she met. Throughout her career she worked as a certified physical therapist and as a registered nurse at Norfolk General Hospital. She retired from First Colonial Family Practice where she met Dee Clark and Gene Monson; dedicated and loyal friends to the end. She looked out for her neighbors and always made sure her favorite mail man had snacks and water to help him through his route. After she retired Carolyn became a lifeguard at Holly Green Apartments; where she taught many children to swim and made dozens of friends that have turned into family.
Carolyn loved the ocean, traveling, spending time with family/family and living her life to the fullest. She was always ready for adventure even if it was just dancing or playing a game of bingo. Bingo was where she met her husband, Clarence ‘Ray’ Kinney, whom preceded her in death after 49 years of marriage. The story all started when he was calling the bingo numbers as she was playing the game. She was also a former First Lady of Virginia Beach Elk’s Lodge 2268 and a member of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary; both of which she was very passionate about.
Carolyn “Nana” Kinney is survived by her loving and devoted daughters, Emma Diane Shorey and Teresa Ann Ballance. Her son-in-law, David Ballance, with whom she shared a special unbreakable bond with and treasured deeply. Sisters Elaine Roorda (Jim) and Ellie Blackburn (Bob), Grandchildren Bobby Allen (Samantha), Jonathan Ray Ballance (Catrina) and Christina Marie Ballance. Great-Grandchildren Dakota, Angelica, Lucas, Samara, and Remington as well as Great-Grandpup Bon Jovi.
Carolyn will be deeply missed and cherished by many. There will be a graveside service conducted at 10am, January 21, 2023, at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Reception to follow at the home of David and Teresa Ballance.
