

Elizabeth Cherry Winfrey, born on March 19, 1923, in Jones County, North Carolina, peacefully went Home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 5, 2025. Elizabeth's life was a testament to her strong faith and commitment to serving others. As an active member of Azalea Baptist Church, she found joy in her ministry, sharing her warmth and generosity with everyone she encountered. Her deep-rooted belief in God guided her through every season of life, inspiring those around her to embrace the teachings of love, kindness and service. Elizabeth was known for her faith, loyalty and her ability to touch the lives of those she met.
Throughout her journey of nearly 102 years, she was a kind and hard working woman. As one of nine siblings, Elizabeth embraced the value of hard work from a young age, nurturing her siblings with motherly love and wisdom. Soon after graduating high school, Elizabeth moved to Norfolk, VA. In 1944, she married Melvin Cherry. For many years, she worked as a hairdresser while raising her family as a military wife. A devoted mother to her two children, Wanda and Glenn, instilling in the the values of faith, strength, compassion and hard work. Elizabeth exemplified resilience and grace, navigating life's challenges with strong Christian morals and family values. Her ability to see the good in every situation and her compassionate heart made her not only a beloved family member, but also a friend and motherly figure to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
As we gather to celebrate the extraordinary life of Elizabeth, let us remember her as a woman who was dedicated to faith, family and community. The legacy of unconditional love, steadfast faith and an enduring spirit that continues to inspire those who knew her. In the hearts of her family and friends, Elizabeth will always be remembered as a Godly woman who lived a life filled with love, purpose and devotion. Her love will echo through the generations, reminding us all to cherish our families and hold fast to our faith.
She will be dearly missed, by all. Elizabeth is survived by her brother, Virgil (Lucille) Eubanks; loving and devoted son, Glenn (Julia) Cherry; stepson Larry (Cynthia) Winfrey; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; seven siblings; first husband, Melvin Cherry; second husband, Guy Winfrey; and daughter Wanda Bumgarner.
Elizabeth's memorial service will be held at Azalea Baptist Church (3314 E. Little Creek Rd, Norfolk, VA.) on March 13, 2025 at 11am, followed by a private burial.
