

George Brooks of Virginia Beach passed away August 11, 2012. Born in Camphill, AL, George accepted Christ at an early age and was a long-time member of the Mt. Harmon Baptist Church, Lanett, AL. He graduated from Lanier High School in 1955. After serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy & 30 years with the DOD at Oceana and Dam Neck Naval Bases, George retired.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene & Rosie Heflin Brooks and brothers Willie & Robert Brooks. George leaves to cherish his memory a loving and caring wife, Ruth Garrett Brooks; Godson, Tony Winston; sisters, Minnie K. Brooks, Victory A. Brooks, Nancy (Preston) Steele, Mary J. Brooks; brothers, Lonnie, Benjamin (Diana) and Claude; uncle Robert L. (Gertrude) Brooks; aunts, Thelma (Edward) Bailey, Sarah Brooks; several nieces and nephews and George's life-long friend, Luther Wortham. George loved sports (football & sailing), received several awards in his Navy career, was an active member of the Tuskegee Airmen Red Tail Association, and strongly supported several charities that ministered to the needy. There will be a 12:00 noon service in celebration of George's life on Saturday, August 18th at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk; viewing from 10:00am-12 noon.
