
Herbert Phillip Powles, Age 91, went to be with the Lord, passing peacefully in his sleep on October 6th, 2007. He was born in Pinetown, NC.on September 2nd, 1916 to the late Walter John and Alice Bierman Powles. Herbert is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Ruth Tupper Powles, his children: Bernice Powles Daugherty and her husband Leonard, of Greenwood SC, Patricia Powles Winston and her husband Hank, of Chesapeake, VA., Pete Powles and his wife Beverly, of Va Beach, 6 grandchildren: Lynn D. McAlea, Robert A. DeLauney, Jennifer Daugherty, Sarah Frederick and her husband Brad, Joanna Marie Powles, Casey John Powles, and 3 great-grandchildren: Shauna, Tori and Danyel, as well as other loving family members.
Herbert served his country in the US Army during WWII and retired from VEPCO in 1979 after 33 years of loyal service. He was a faithful member of Trinity Word of Faith Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He spent much of his retired years delivering Meals on Wheels and traveling. Herbert was also a member of the Gas House Gang. Special thanks to the Sentara Hospice staff especially Kim, the Brighton Gardens staff especially Cheryl, and the staff of Home Instead for all their loving care during his illness.
A Service to Celebrate Herbert's Life will be held at the Woodlawn Funeral Home 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA, 23502 on Wednesday October 10th, 2007, at 11:00 AM with the Pastor Leroy Briggs officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Faith at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with Military Honors accorded Mr. Powles. The Family will receive friends on Tuesday October 9th,2007 from 6-8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Benevolent Fund of Trinity Word of Faith Baptist Church or to the Sentara Hospice Foundation in Herbert's name.
