James Louis Hatfield of VA Beach, VA lost his long battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Thursday February 26, 2015. Louis was a long time Norfolk native and graduated as salutatorian from Granby High School in 1948. He went on to William and Mary and received an Associate Degree in 1950. He received a BA in Mathematics at the University of Virginia in 1952, the same year he was inducted in Phi Beta Kappa. In 1955, He received his Master’s Degree from University of Virginia. He taught Mathematics at Old Dominion University from 1956-1989. His teaching career continued at Tidewater Community College until he retired in 1995. Louis is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sherry B. Hatfield; his daughter Annah Vaughn Hatfield; and grandson Carter Huff all of Virginia Beach. Louis was known for his intelligence, dry wit, and caring heart. He will be greatly missed. A private service will be held at a later date. Woodlawn Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
