

Jim was born on September 15, 1935, in Moorefield, WV, the only boy and youngest of 5 children. He graduated from Grafton High School in 1954 where he met his future wife, Peggy. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy and served proudly for 21 years. Jim & Peggy married in 1958 and after several military assignments, they settled in Virginia Beach where they made a permanent home to raise their family. After retirement from the military, Jim continued his career working in the refrigeration business for Giant/Farm Fresh Supermarkets for 25 years, eventually starting his own very successful commercial refrigeration business with his son, Joe. Jim worked until he retired at the age of 85. Jim’s career was marked by integrity and excellence. He was respected by colleagues and cherished by those he mentored, always taking the time to share his knowledge and wisdom. Outside of work, Jim was passionate about his hobbies, whether it was spending time outdoors, or simply enjoying a good book with a glass of wine.
He taught us all the most important things in life were Health, Love & Family. Above all, Jim was a devoted family man. His love for his spouse, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family was unwavering. He took great pride in their accomplishments and was their steadfast supporter through all their challenges and triumphs.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his children Kevin (Margaret), Joe (Michelle), daughter-in-law Tracie, his grandchildren, Tyler (Melissa), Colin (Ashley), Kali (Jordan), Connor (Erin) and Taylor, his great grandchildren Parker and Callum, sister Jackie Alberston, many nephews and nieces, and a wide circle of friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, son John, mother Mamie Roomsburg and sisters Lila Hahn, Jean Hardman, and Betty Jo Friend.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM-7:00 PM on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA. A Liturgy of the Word will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, 12:00 PM, at Woodlawn Funeral Home immediately followed by a graveside service.
