John Ritchie Jr.

John Phillip Ritchie, Jr., known to most as Big John or J.R., passed away in his sleep on August 8th, 2025 in Norfolk, Virginia; he was 66 years old. John is preceded in death by his father, John Sr.; mother, Ann Marie; and brother, James Dale. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Rita Gail; his son and best friend, John III (Tina); and grandson, Tyler; brothers Joe and Jeff; sisters Erica, Patricia, Natalie, and Lanie (Adam). After graduating from Preble Shawnee High School in Ohio, John joined the Navy for 4 years. After getting out, he went on to work for Norshipco/BAE Systems for 44 years. John spent most of his free time serving the youth in the community volunteering, coaching and mentoring, for 33 years with Little Creek National and Tarrallton Basketball. In 2006, John was picked for ESPN’s “MVP” Most Valuable Parent Award. In 2010, he was picked by Channel 3 for People Taking Action Award. He made a lasting impact in the lives of his family, friends, and coworkers with his smile, laughter, and kindness. His family will welcome friends and loved ones on Thursday, August 14, 2025 from 4 to 7pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home at 6329 East Virginia Beach Blvd. A graveside service will be held on August 15th, 2025 at 2:00pm at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with a reception to follow at the funeral home.
