Kenneth Wesley Sykes III, known to his family and friends as “Wes”, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on August 12, 2016. A true Norfolk native, he was born in Norfolk, VA, September 18, 1951. He was predeceased by his father Kenneth Wesley Sykes, Jr. and mother Clara H. Sykes. He is survived by his loving wife Ann Freeman Sykes; son Travis W. Sykes and his wife Katherine, and her son Jason, granddaughter Allie R. Sykes; brother William G. Sykes and wife Frankie; brother Richard L. Sykes and wife Christie and their sons Jeremy and Justin. He is also survived by many other aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family. He graduated from ODU with a master’s degree in Civil Engineering, was a registered professional engineer in Virginia and North Carolina, and served in the US Coast Guard Reserves. Wes worked for the City of Norfolk’s survey department, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the US Coast Guard. Wes really enjoyed the time he had with Ann, traveling and watching the view from their backyard, and the rabbits. He also enjoyed the time he spent with Travis and Allie, especially when they were hunting or fishing together. The family would like to thank Travis’s mother Linda Bondurant, Allie’s mother Meg, and her grandmother Ruth Ann for their help and support during this difficult time. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 818 Norview Ave, Norfolk. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2016. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research or Sentara Hospice Services.
