Lawrence (Larry) D. Ward of Norfolk, Virginia passed away on April 23, 2025 at the age of 83. He was born on September 27, 1941 in Goldsboro, North Carolina where he grew up. Larry graduated from Goldsboro High School with his beloved class in 1959. In 1963, he graduated from Frederick College and was the president of its first graduating class. He taught math in Norfolk Schools until his retirement.
Larry loved the outdoors; hunting and fishing were two of his favorite pastimes. A natural athlete, he was inducted into Virginia Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame. He also bowled in a league and played golf regularly. Larry's love of music and bass voice allowed him to share his talent through two choirs at Azalea Baptist Church and Virginia Voices, and the quartet Heaven Bound.
Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Ben Ward; and parents, Benjamin (Buck) and Virginia Ward. He is survived by his sister, Debbie Hughes (Rick); nephews, Will Hughes and David Ward; and nieces, Ginny Hughes and Karen Glenny. Larry cherished his friends and was loyal to those from his childhood, career, hunting and church. Larry and his "lady friend" Vickie Barden enjoyed ballgames, movies, plays and concerts together.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Lake Taylor Transitional Hospital and Norfolk General ER and ICU for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in his final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Thursday, May 1st at Azalea Baptist Church, 3314 East Little Creek Road, Norfolk, VA. Visiting hours will be at 9:30am and the service at 11:00am, with internment following. A reception will follow at the church after burial.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Larry's memory to Azalea Baptist church or Virginia Voices International where donations may be made online with PayPal
