I was sitting eating lunch and talking about my first grade teacher with my friend who also had Ms Townsend. crazy how that was 20 years ago. Looked her up to unfortunately find that she passed away. I will always remember her. she was my first teacher when i moved to the united states. I didn’t speak english, it was hard and confusing but Ms townsend was always kind and made me feel safe. she would hold my hand every day while we waited for my mom to pick me up. may she rest in peace. sending my condolences and prayers 

Mary was my first grade teacher from '91 to '92. I was fortunate to be taught by one of the best teachers at Sherwood Forest Elementary. I'm sad that she has passed away. I offer my condolences to her family and may Mary fly with the angels. I know that with all she'd done in life, her wings are full and beautiful. Rest in peace and thank you for teaching me!

My parents and I have only known Mary for about six or seven years. Not only was she a good friend, she was part of our family. She did so much for so many. Especially when it came to children and the community. We spoke to each other just about everyday. Some of the conversations lasted five minutes and some lasted forty-five minutes. Regardless of the length of the conversation, we always made sure we said, "I love you" before hanging up. I'm so thankful that those were the last words I said to her. And my prayer is that she knows exactly how much she was loved by so many. Rest In Peace, Mary. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.  We love you! During my teaching career I worked at Sherwood Forest and became friends with Mary.  She was a loving person who cared deeply for the children and a good friend to all of us on the faculty.   My deep condolences and prayers for the family and friends for the loss.  Keep her memory alive by remembering her and speaking of her to others.  God Bless.

I had the privilege to work with Mary Townsend at Sherwood Forest Elementary school.   She touched the lives and careers of many children.  She cared deeply about all of the students she worked with.  God Bless you Mary.

I have known Mary for 37 years. She taughte in sunday school and taught all 4 of my childRen in sunday school as well. We worked together in bible school for numerous years. Church just won't be the same without her kind spirit and words. You will be truly missed. Heaven gained a precious angel. May God bless you. Until we see each other again.

When my family moved to Norfolk and started attending Temple Baptist Church, Maryou was one of the first to welcome us. She welcomed us with a huge smile and opened arms. She had our youngest 3 in Sunday school and she loved these girls with all she had, but more importantly she showed them the love of Jesus. I also had the privilege of working in the food pantry with Mary. We had so much fun and shared so many good times. After we left Virginia, Mary was one of the few to remain in contact with us. We loved her like she was family. She will truly be missed. But we rest in knowing that we will see her again. RIP Mary. We love you
