

Michael "Mike" Atkinson passed on May 14, 2026, at the age of 66. He was born on March 14, 1960 to the late Charles and Ann Atkinson. He graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School in 1979 and attended Old Dominion University from September 1979 to May 1981. Mike then went on to proudly serve the Norfolk Police Department as an officer in the 2nd Precinct from August 1981 to September 2006 (25 years.) He was a 3rd and 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 367, where he had achieved a lifetime membership. He held all officer positions in the 3rd Degree and served as Council 367's Financial Secretary and was referred to as the best Secretary of the First Council of the South. With the 4th Degree, he served as Assembly 1162's Comptroller. He participated in many of the organization's charity events and many 4th Degree functions in full regalia. Mike also helped many people at Ocean View Council 3548 and was well liked by many of his fellow Knights in his and surrounding councils. He was also Knight of the Month multiple times and was very proud of his association with the Knights. Several years after retirement in 2015, he became employed at Advanced Auto Parts, working his way up from a Mobile Parts Professional Driver to a Retail Parts Professional Manager. Due to health reasons, he had just recently resigned. Mike was a huge fan of the New York Yankees and he loved a nice, cold Cherry Coke.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 40 years, Susan; daughter, Kassidy; siblings, Charlotte and Butch; and a host of other family and friends.
The family invites friends for a time of visitation at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk on Thursday, May 21, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The funeral service to celebrate Mike's life will be held at the funeral home on Friday, May 22, 2026, beginning at 11:00 am.
