Mildred Elizabeth Sellers, 91, cherished wife, mother, sister, grandma and friend went to be with the Lord on 15 January 2025. Mrs. Sellers was born in North Carolina to the late McElrie Sellers and Blanche Sellers. She was a faithful founding member of Calvary Baptist Church where she served as a principal caretaker for infants and toddlers in the children’s ministry for over 60 years. Following graduation from Princeton High School, Mildred joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Washington, D.C. She then married James “JA” Sellers in 1952 and settled in Virginia Beach (Princess Ann County). Mildred was a dedicated homemaker and was a retiree of the Virginia Beach Public Schools. She was known for her ability to meet and greet many people and never seemed to know a stranger. Some people believe the World Wide WEB was “invented” in the 1990’s by folks in Washington; but Mildred’s “network of people and activities” began in the 1950’s and flourished throughout her life. In a word, she was tenacious and used her abilities as a phone warrior to quickly connect people to accomplish tasks and share information, decades ahead of today’s many social media outlets. Throughout her life, Mildred was on a mission to help people “Know Jesus”. She loved her music, especially Southern Gospel, “as God Intended” and used her entire network to attend and support the Tidewater Gospel Music Association events hosted by Pinecrest Baptist Church, Portsmouth. She will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to know her.
Mildred was predeceased by her husband, James “JA” Sellers, brothers Mac Sellers and Harold Sellers and many other Family & Friends. She is survived by three children, Donnie Sellers and wife Vicki, Terry Sellers and wife Lori, Belinda Richardson and husband David; eight grandchildren, Alan Sellers, John Sellers, Jeremy Richardson, Amy Lewis, Neil Sellers, Christopher Richardson, Morgan Sellers, and Tara Lopez; brother, Jay Sellers and sister, Carole McDowell; and fifteen great grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Amedisys hospice caregivers and especially nurses Laura and Vicki and their assistant Donnie.
A visitation will be held on Saturday 18 January from 9:00-9:45 AM followed by a Celebration of Life service, burial and reception at Woodlawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens 329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA, 23502. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, Virginia Beach Building Fund.
