

Nona Lou Fees Hammer, 103, went to be with the Lord Friday, February 24, 2012. She was born in Halltown, Lawrence County, Missouri on December 27, 1908. Nona loved telling stories of growing up around Turnback Creek and her beautiful little church. She worked in the Carnation plant in Mount Vernon, MO. Nona was deeply committed to her family and to her faith. She understood the value of family history and of doing right things, in the right way with a right heart. Nona especially loved her years with her husband on a little farm in Chesapeake, VA. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Norfolk, VA.
Nona is predeceased by her father Ira Orestes Fees in 1915 and her mother Mary Frances Mason Fees in 1917; her husband Clyde Emery Hammer in 1985; siblings Alsie Pearl Fees in 1898, Louis Edmond Fees in 1942, Alva Eugene (Ted) Fees in 1975, and Jewel Gladys Fees in 1990; her children Shirley Ruth Upton in 2010, and Carolyn Kay Garris in 2010. She is survived by her grandchildren Roberta Upton of Winston-Salem, NC, Mary Upton Zamora of Hephzibah, GA, Kathy Upton of Azle, TX, David Upton of Winston-Salem, NC, and Jeff Garris of Williamsburg, VA; great-grandchildren Nicholas Zamora, Melissa Zamora, Rebecca Evans, Susan Evans, Nathaniel Upton, and Geoffrey Upton; great-great grandchild Isabella Marie Zamora; and son-in-law Richard Garris of Norfolk, VA.
A graveside service will be held Monday, February 27, at 2pm in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6309 E. Virginia Beach Blvd. Norfolk with Rev. Fred J. Braswell officiating.
