Phillip Y.D. Chan, 92, of Chesapeake, VA, completed his earthly journey peacefully on November 30, 2025. Born on September 22, 1933, in China to his cherished parents, Phillip's life was an epitome of resilience, hard work, and infectious love for life.
Renowned for his immense work ethic, Phillip was an accomplished restaurant entrepreneur whose mastery in the kitchen was greatly admired. The taste of his Chinese BBQ and donuts left a lasting impression on all who tasted them and will forever be legendary within his community. Phillip's love for food transcended his restaurant as he delighted in creating not just meals but priceless memories for his family and friends.
Phillip, an enthusiastic outdoors-man, derived great joy from fishing in local waters. His garden was a testament to his green thumb and endless patience. His expertise as a DIYer was well recognized, and from grills to decks to pagodas, the objects he crafted were a reflection of his limitless creativity. His artistic flair extended to his beautiful paintings that showcased his fine appreciation for detail and color.
Phillip's life was a tapestry of dedication, love, and resilience, intertwined with joy, sacrifice, and perseverance. Survived by his loving spouse, Sim Sau, his devoted daughter, Susan, his son-in-law, Thomas, and their daughter Marissa; he also leaves behind his son, William, daughter-in-law, Kimberly, and their children, William, Connor, Sabreena, and Jessica. His spirit will continue to thrive through his great-grandson, Kailan, and the many lives that bear the imprint of his love, wisdom, and strength.
As we say our final goodbye, we hold on to the memories, the lessons, the love Phillip generously shared. His absence will be deeply felt, yet his legacy lives on in every life he touches. As we mourn, we also celebrate a life passionately lived and remember Phillip as a man whose presence warmed hearts and enlightened souls.
His Funeral Service will be held December 13, at 12pm at Woodlawn Funeral home, with a visitation the hour prior, providing an opportunity for all those who've had their lives touched by Phillip to come together in celebrating a remarkable life.
