Robert E. Dickason, Sr., beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died in his home in Virginia Beach on Friday, July 16, 2010 at 6:10 a.m. with his wife Alice by his side. Bob and Alice were married for fifty-nine years. Bob was 80 years old.
Bob was born in Marion, Ohio in 1930. His parents were Richard Frances Dickason and Elizabeth Jane Christ. Bob is also predeceased by brothers Lee, Lewis, and Glenn, but is survived by another brother, Richard, and his sister, Carol.
A proud veteran, Bob served his country after enlisting at age 18. As a young sailor, Bob met Alice at a roller skating rink in Newport, Rhode Island and a new military family was born.
Twenty years later, after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, Bob enjoyed working at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where he worked as a quality control inspector in the nuclear program.
With 31 years in government service, Bob really did retire – and even so, he taught woodworking classes at the Norfolk Senior Center and was readily available to his family and friends for anything they might need.
Throughout his life, Bob enjoyed interesting hobbies that included being surrounded by others: bowling, square-dancing/calling, genealogy, playing/calling bingo, reading, and just being around family.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his four children and their spouses: Bob Dickason Jr. and wife Elizabeth, Deborah Dickason Wahlstrom and husband Mark, Michael Dickason and wife Shirley, and Donald Dickason and wife Elizabeth.
Grandchildren: Bill Dickason – (grandson) and wife Laura Julia Dickason Huddleston – (granddaughter) and husband Brian Jessica Dickason (granddaughter) Matthew Dickason (grandson) Justin Dickason (grandson) Ryan Dickason (grandson) Andrea Wahlstrom Garst (step-granddaughter) and husband, Brandon Brian Wahlstrom (step-grandson)
Great Grandchildren: Isabella Dickason (great-grandaughter) Nicholas Dickason (great- grandson) Jaden Williams (great-grandson)
We’ll remember Bob by so many of the positive qualities that he brought to life. He was caring, humorous, witty, empathetic, kind, knowledgeable, an avid reader, lover of sports, lover of people, and very nonjudgmental. We’ll also remember a favorite phrase, “Win big!” He touched many lives and radiated warmth and love to all. We will hold him in our hearts forever.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, followed by a Military committal at the gravesite. Woodlawn Funeral Home & Cemetery (Norfolk, VA) is handling all arrangements, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd.
Following the service, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., the family will welcome friends at the home of Mark and Deborah Wahlstrom, 137 Pitchkettle Point Circle, Suffolk, VA 23434.
