

Rupert "Sonny" Elster Varney Jr., 80, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on April 5, 2026. Born on August 1, 1945, in Mate One, West Virginia; Sonny was beloved and cherished by those who knew him. He will be remembered as a generous, kind-hearted, and devoted man whose steady presence brought comfort and strength to his family and friends.
Sonny was a retired Longshoreman. Throughout his life, he was hard-working and resilient, meeting each season with patient determination and quiet courage. Sonny was widely known for being kind and thoughtful, offering wise counsel when it was needed most, and doing so with a selfless spirit that placed others before himself.
Sonny’s humorous nature and loyal heart made time with him both meaningful and light, and his adventurous, brave outlook served as an inspirational example to many. His life reflected consistent care, steady integrity, and a deep commitment to the people and responsibilities he held close.
Rupert "Sonny" Elster Varney, Jr., is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Marilyn Varney, but their love spands for over 52 years. He also leaves behind five children, Paul Varney, Stacy Wright, Sunny Reynolds, Sonya Varney, and Rupert E. Varney, III. Also left to cherish his memories are his thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great- grandchildren; along with two devoted brothers Gene Akins and George Grimmett and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Rupert was preceded in death by his father Rupert Elster Varney, Sr., his mommy Beatrice McCoy and his first born son Donald Varney. Rupert was also predeceased by his aunt and uncle Gladys and Robert Parsley, his cousin Dorcas Ann Stanley who was more like a sister to him, and a grandson Justin Varney.
Rupert will always be remembered by his family as an extraordinarily compassionate, loving, and caring husband, daddy, granddaddy, great- granddaddy, brother, cousin, and a genuine man who loved his family immensely. Sonny leaves behind a true and precious legacy that will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
Visitation will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA 23502, on April 14, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
