She was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina August 31,1947, as the youngest child of James and Emily Burrus. Sandra graduated from P.W. Moore high school and worked briefly in New York and New Jersey.
Sandra moved from New York in the 70’s with her beloved husband George and son Reginald to make Virginia Beach their home. After more than twenty years of dedicated civilian service she retired from Oceana Naval base. Sandra loved music, cooking and more than anything she loved to laugh. An avid gardener Sandra could bring any plant back to life and her home was always full of every variety of house plant. Sandy had a love of birds and appreciated their beauty and their wonderful songs. While she never came around to having a live bird as a pet, she built a wonderful collection of bird figurines. For many years every holiday and birthday she was sure to receive gifts of ceramic or porcelain birds to add to her collection.
For thirty joy filled years Sandra was an active member of First Baptist Lambert’s Point. She served with the missionaries of the church family, sang in the choir, and was as a Deaconess. She was active more than twenty years with her sisters of the Eastern Star until illness prevented her participation. Over the many years other civic organizations benefited from her time and talent such as the local AARP chapter, VB Triad senior awareness and the NAACP.
Sandra is predeceased by her husband George Leman Gaylord. She is survived by her son Reginald C. Burrus and her daughter-in-law, Maurna Ruth Snider. To keep her memory are a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
