Betty Jo Vaughan Bigbie, 96, of Norman Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2019 in Dallas, Texas at the home of her sister, Patsy Vaughan Payton. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2019 at Primrose Funeral Service in Norman, Oklahoma. The family will be greeting visitors on Wednesday, March 7, 2019 from 5-8 pm at the funeral home.
Betty Vaughan Bigbie was born in Norman, Oklahoma to Thistle and Cicero Vaughan on September 25, 1922. She attended schools in Norman, Oklahoma. She married Harvey Otis Bigbie on October 27, 1944 in Norman, Oklahoma. During World War II, while her husband was serving in the Navy stationed in Chicago, she worked on The Manhattan Project. Later she and Otis had two children, Larry Joe Bigbie and Linda Jane Bigbie. With her husband, and after his death she owned and operated Engineering Sales Company. She was a member of the West Side Church of Christ, Business and Professional Women’s Club, the Adair Home Demonstration Club, Credit Women International Club, Altrusa of Norman, and Norman Galaxy of Writers.
Betty was a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and great aunt. She enjoyed traveling, hunting, and was open to participating in any new experience. At age 90 Betty authored two books about her life and her family history. Family and its genealogy were of most importance to her and she was committed to passing this information down to other generations. Betty was passionate about women’s rights, and education.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents Cicero and Thistle Vaughan, husband Otis Bigbie, children Larry Bigbie, and Linda Jane Bigbie Pittman, brother Jerry Vaughan and wife Jessie of Norman Oklahoma.
Betty is survived by her sister Patsy Vaughan Payton and husband Tom Payton of Dallas, Texas, granddaughter Melissa Pittman Roberts of Tulsa Oklahoma, and grandsons Dustin Bigbie and wife Amanda, Andrew Bigbie and wife Nicole, and Ezra Pittman and wife Kate of Norman, Oklahoma, along with nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Dustin Bigbie, Andrew Bigbie, Ezra Pittman, Christopher Payton, Noah Payton, and Tom Watson.
