

Betty Joline Schmitt passed away peacefully at the age of 92, November 18, 2021 with her children lovingly by her side. As she would have said, “I’ve crossed the river Jordan, to the promised land and home.” Betty was born in Norman, Oklahoma October 19, 1929 to Vara and Joseph Cox. After graduating from Norman High School in 1947 she went on to graduate from Bethany Peniel College in 1952 with Bachelor’s in Fine Arts and her teacher’s certificate in Early Childhood Education 1953. She met Leroy Schmitt while teaching in Blackwell, Oklahoma and married him in 1956. She was blessed with two daughters Cynthia Jolene, and Pamela Rose and a son Kevin Leroy. Her family was her foundation and passion and she adopted her grandson, Joseph Aaron.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents Vara and Joseph Cox. She was the oldest of three siblings and his preceded in death by her sister Joyce Carr and brother Joseph Lindel Cox. She has left this life to be with her husband of 56 years Leroy Schmitt and daughter Pamela Rose Allen.
Betty was Noble Church of the Nazarene’s pianist for many years. She and her sister Joyce held creative and memorable Vacation Bible schools every summer for Grace Nazarene Church and First Nazarene Church of Norman during the 1970s and 80s creating an inclusive and loving experience for many children over the years. She also loved teaching children in Sunday school for many years.
Betty loved to garden, and every spring her house was surrounded by flowers of every kind. Her sister used to say, she kept Brecks in clover from the amount of bulbs she purchased every year. She also was an avid letter writer and was the glue that kept everyone informed in her extended family of uncles, aunts and cousins from Oregon, California to Oklahoma.
Betty donated generously to the Women’s Resource Center of Norman, Oklahoma, Innocence Project and Wounded Warriors. She also gave to Nazarene Missionaries faithfully year after year.
Betty is survived by her daughter Cynthia Schmitt, son Kevin Schmitt and grandson Aaron Schmitt. She leaves behind grandson Michael Allen and granddaughter Lisa Adams. Other grandchildren include Daxus Schmitt, Misty Vincent, Madeline Schmitt, Kori Schmitt and Blaine Schmitt. She leaves behind a legacy of 19 great grandchildren.
Betty had the gift of laughter and has passed this on to her children and grandchildren. Reunions and holidays were memorable as they were filled with humor, laughter and overwhelming love.
She loved angels and now has her own wings.
Visitation will be held at Primrose Funeral Service 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm November 22 and the Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm November 23, 2021 at Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 North Porter Ave, Norman, OK 73071.
