A lifelong resident of Norman, who absolutely would not let you forget that fact, she was born to Dalton and Alma Brockman on January 6, 1947. Bonnie attended Norman Public Schools, where she starred on a City Championship basketball team, although her lack of height severely limited any future basketball opportunities.
She met and married the love of her life, Warren McKenzie, in 1963 and they remained together until his death in 2010.
Bonnie enjoyed spending time in her garden, and as she became older, bribing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren into helping her with small tasks in the yard and the flowerbeds. Most notably, picking all the seeds off her tiger lilies to make sure she had dozens of the big orange flowers every year.
Never one to turn down a good party, she enjoyed taking frequent cruises, spending late nights at the casino, and trips to visit friends and relatives across the country. She was one of the founding members of the Norman Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary and a frequent entrant in competitions at the Cleveland County Fair.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Dalton and Alma Brockman, her husband, Warren McKenzie, her grandson, Aaron Donwerth, and her sister, Norma Peterson.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna Barnard and husband Vint, and Debra Donwerth and husband Edward, all of Norman; two grandsons, Derek Donwerth and wife Stephanie, and Justin Donwerth, all of Norman; two great-grandchildren, Blake (10) and Violet (4); three sisters, Janette Martin and husband Dwayne of Blanchard, Darlene Drayton of Oxnard, Calif., and Marsha McCracken and husband Howard of Norman; and many other relatives and close friends.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 21 at 10am at Primrose Funeral Home, with a graveside service to follow. She will also be available for viewing on Sunday, February 20 from noon to 4pm. The family would welcome anyone who would like to stop by and share a memory or say their goodbyes.
Edward Donwerth, Derek Donwerth, Justin Donwerth, Blake Donwerth, Norman McCracken, and Chris Tolbert will serve as pallbearers. Vint Barnard will serve as honorary pallbearer.
