Shortly after David's birth, the family moved to California, where his brother, Steve, was born in 1951. In 1952, David's parents, Martha Jean and Harry Culbertson, divorced. Following the divorce, David and his brother, Steve, were placed in the care of their Aunt Gladys and Uncle Mac. At the request of their grandmother, Stella Martin, who lived in Enid, Aunt Gladys and Uncle Mac returned David and Steve to Oklahoma later that year.
In Oklahoma, David and Steve were adopted by Martha's brother, Chester Paul Martin, and raised by him and his wife, Lillian Marie "Fuxa" Martin, as their sons. They were lovingly joined by Chester and Lillian's older children, Christine "Owens" Martin, Marilyn "Urban" Martin, and Ronald Martin, who David considered his beloved siblings.
David grew up in Enid, Oklahoma, and graduated from Enid High School. He then enlisted in the military and served three years in Germany, followed by a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1970 with the 25th Infantry Division. Remarkably, David and his brother Steve served in the same division at the same time. After his return from Vietnam and receiving an honorable discharge, David married the love of his life, his longtime girlfriend Kathy Smith.
Ronald Martin, his daughter Melanie Lynn Martin, Christine Owens, and her children Johnnie Hahn and Susan Mason, Marilyn Urban's son Alan Russell Boyer, as well as extended family members Roberta "Bobby" Barber, Bob Barber, and Michael Barber, all preceded David in death.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy, of 53 years; his cherished son, Jeremiah Martin; and his grandchildren Cory, Brayden, Derek, and Lilly Martin. He is also survived by his brother, Mark "Steve" Martin; his sister, Marilyn Urban; and Marilyn's children, Gary Boyer and Lisa Landon. Additional survivors include extended family members Debrah "Debbie" Barber, Richard "Rick" Barber, Paula Sue Barber, Tab Barber, Donald "Donnie" Barber, Karen Hays, Harry M. "Sonny" Culbertson Jr., John Paul Culbertson, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and one aunt, Ruth "Martin" Kinney.
A celebration of life service for David will be held Saturday, April 5, 2025 from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM at The Depot, 200 S. Jones Ave, Norman, OK 73069.
