He is also survived by fifteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doyle was born November 17, 1931 at University Hospital in Oklahoma City. He grew up working on a 320 acre farm in the 10-mile flat of Norman. He was an active participant in FFA and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and reading. Perhaps the most exciting time of his youth was meeting Eloise Hansmeyer and spending time with her and her Hansmeyer siblings. Doyle and Eloise were married on October 28, 1950. He enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard and deployed with the 45th Infantry Division to the Korean War in 1953. He returned home at the rank of Sergeant to a new family. He and Eloise ran a dairy and cotton farm with their four children until he became a IBEW Union Electrician in the 60s. In the 80s, Doyle and Eloise temporarily moved to New York City while he wired new skyscrapers in Manhattan as a Union Electrician. In addition to hunting and fishing with his boys and dear friends, Doyle played softball and wrote an outdoors column for the Norman Transcript called ‘Afield and Afloat’. He was an expert marksman, and unrivaled in winged bird shooting. Doyle never missed opening day of dove season after his first as an adolescent. He traveled to 49/50 states, with Louisiana being one of his most favorite. In retirement, Doyle and Eloise pulled a travel trailer and bass boat in tandem to Louisiana for over a decade staying for months on end to fish. Doyle made many trips with the ‘Green Guys’ (and sometimes gals!) to Alaska, Canada, and Mexico to camp and fish.
Doyle exhibited an incredible drive and zest for life that never dimmed. Many knew he had a green thumb, and he found great joy raising an extensive vegetable garden in the bottomland acre every single year of his adult life in Oklahoma. This garden brought the whole family together, and lots of good times were had shucking corn, gathering okra, and of course, eating watermelon under the cottonwoods. He could still be found hunting, fishing, and recounting stories of life’s adventures to eager listeners into his last days. His upstanding values and eagerness to experience life to its fullest live on in through his children and multiple grandchildren.
A funeral service for Doyle will be held Thursday, October 6, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 North Porter Ave, Norman, OK 73071.
