

Dr. Harold Alvin Hayes Jr. was born on March 19, 1950, in Norman, Oklahoma. He was the son of Harold Alvin Hayes Sr., and Joyce Jean (Leys) Hayes. He grew up in Oklahoma, attending schools in Oklahoma, graduating from Elkhart High School in 1968. Following his education, he attended the University of Tulsa, receiving his Bachelors in Education. While attending Tulsa, he played on the basketball and football teams. He then began his coaching career at the Bishop Kelley High School and later he coached at Marquette School in Tulsa and Chelsea High School. He then attended Oklahoma State University, receiving his Master’s in Education in 1980. He also continued his coaching career during this time at Frederick High School and Paoli Public Schools. In 1980, He began as Principal at the Butner/Cromwell Elementary Schools. He later received his Doctorate in Education from Oklahoma State University. He later was the principal at Olive Public Schools in Drumright. He then became Superintendent at the following school over the years, Mason, Lone Wolf, Dibble, Bishop, and Wakita. He later retired and became the part time superintendent at Wanette Public Schools. He was a member of the Oklahoma Association of Business and Finance, Oklahoma and National Associations of School Administrators, National Association of Elementary Principals, National High School Coaches Association, and numerous other associations.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by two sons, Chris Hayes, and Kyle Hayes, both of Norman; and his fiancé Janice Spangler; and one sister, Pam Gutierrez.
Services are scheduled for 10:00 am Tuesday, December 27, 2016, at the Primrose Funeral Service Chapel, with Rev. Terry Boston officiating. Burial will be in the Fort Sill National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Dr. Harold’s memory with St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
