

Joe was born in Kinta, Oklahoma, and lived a life rooted in family, hard work, and simple joys. He was married to his beloved wife, Sherry Shelton, with whom he shared a deep love and companionship.
He was a proud father to Judy Ann Shelton, Jackie Smith and husband Jim, Joe Ray Shelton and wife Bobbi, Jeff Shelton, Christopher Shelton, Keith Hargis and wife Joanna, Steve Hargis, Jennifer Hargis, Lennie Hathaway, Joseph Hathaway and wife Jennifer, and Matthew Hathaway. Joe was also blessed with 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and happiness.
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Vera Jennings; his father, Riley Shelton; his daughter, Judy Ann Shelton; and 10 siblings.
Joe had a deep appreciation for life’s pleasures. He enjoyed country music, hunting, fishing, boating, bowling, riding four-wheelers, camping, traveling, and especially family dinners. He was a devoted fan of OSU football and basketball and Oklahoma City Thunder basketball. Some of his happiest moments were spent at the lake house he built himself, sipping coffee, watching CNN, enjoying good food, and relaxing with his loyal dog, Chance.
Joe took great pride in many accomplishments throughout his life, including getting a hole-in-one while golfing, building his lake house, exercising his right to vote, and, most of all, spending time with his family and friends. He was known for his steady presence, his love for conversation, and the way he showed up for the people he cared about.
Joe will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Primrose Funeral Service, located at 3901 N Flood Ave., Norman, OK, 73069, on January 21, 2026, starting at 2:00 pm.
