John Leon Koonce, 91, of Oklahoma City, went to be with the Lord on January 14, 2021. He was born on November 17, 1929 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Guy Leonard Koonce and Edith Mae (Melton) Koonce. He grew up in the Tuttle area, where he met his bride of 67 years, Alpha Dorene (Johnson) Koonce. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. John retired from York International. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, camping, fixing cars and motorcycles, OU football and studying God’s Word. He dedicated time to teaching Sunday School, singing in the church choir and even serving as a bi-vocational pastor during his younger years. During his final time on Earth, he resided at Harbor Chase in Oklahoma City, where he was dearly loved by his caretakers, who referred to him as “Papa J.”
John was preceded in death by his wife Alpha Dorene Koonce; parents Guy and Edith Koonce; brothers Bob, Cecil, Gene and Guy (Junior); sons Stephen Leon Koonce and Stanley Dwain Koonce; daughter Theresa Dorene Hayes. John is survived by daughters-in-law, Marilyn Koonce and Carol Koonce; son-in-law Gary Hayes; grandchildren Justin Koonce, Desiree Allison, Brandon Koonce, Brent Koonce, Ashly Cooley and Lindsey Clements; and great grandchildren Karson, Jarren, Kinley, Jacie, Easton, Jacob, Natalie, Landon, Brock, Tanner, Amelia, Piper and Brooklyn.
