Phyllis G Baker

Phyllis grew up in Poteau and attended Poteau High School where she was a majorette and band queen. After graduating in 1944, Phyllis attended college at Oklahoma Women’s College and Northeastern State University where she was a cheerleader and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. Phyllis went on to teach in Kansas City and Burbank, OK.

She married her high school sweetheart, Dr. Charley Frank Baker in 1948. Frankie was a dentist and Phyllis often worked as an assistant at his dental office. In 1961 they moved to Norman where they raised their four children.

Phyllis spent her life sharing her love for Jesus with everyone she met. Phyllis and Frankie were members of the First Church and they served on many mission trips traveling to Honduras, Bolivia, China, Israel, and Dutch Guiana.

Phyllis was a member of many Christian women’s groups, taught weekly bible studies, and composed as well as published collections of praise hymns.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her beloved husband and best friend, Charley Frank Baker; parents; and two sisters, Betty Frank Plumlee and Jolein Brown.

She is survived by her children Lysbeth (Libby) Adkins and husband Scott of Goldsby; Chuck Baker and wife Diana of Norman, Jennifer Wolf and husband Jerry of Blanchard, David Baker and wife Jimmie of Norman; twelve grandchildren, Allen Lee Bailey, Brandon Adkins, Brett Adkins and wife Tina, Phillip Adkins and wife Monica, Jeremiah Wolf and wife Terry, Lysbeth George and husband David, Sarah Gladhill and husband Blake, Eric Baker, Jenny Cain and husband Lorenzo, Megan Hilliary and husband Dustin, Allison Baker, Kelcie Wolf; 13 great-grandchildren, Taylor Adkins, Blake Adkins, Chloe Bennett, Madison Adkins, Cashton Adkins, Gavin George, Raelee Adkins, Evelyn Wolf, Keegan Hilliary, Emory George, Milo Wolf, Auburn Adkins and Austin Gladhill; nieces and nephews, Paula Tobin, Gayla Goodell, Furan Jackson and Preston Plumlee.

Phyllis, or as her many grandchildren knew her, Grandma Gayle, was beautiful in every sense of the word and her love for her Savior was evident in everything she did, from caring for her family to showing compassion to those in need. If you ever met her, changes are she prayed for you by name. She will be missed dearly and is now in heaven with her precious Jesus, hand in hand with her sweetheart, Frankie.

Services will be 2:00p.m. Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at First Church, 131 NW 4th Street, OKC, OK 73102, with burial to follow at Warren Cemetery in Norman.
