Ron was born in McAlester, OK on 6/28/1943 to Emmett Johnson Cox and Mary Frances Cox (nee Chamness) and died at home in Norman, OK on 6/16/2025 after struggling with Acute Myeloid Leukemia for over a year, with his loving wife, Teri and his beloved dog, Sofie at his side.
Ron and Teri met in 1999 while both living in Enid, OK and were married in 2000 in Carson City, NV. They would have celebrated 25 years of marriage next month.
Ron grew up in Wilburton, OK and graduated a proud Digger, class of 1961. He furthered his education and achieved a Master’s in Education through East Central University, Ada, OK. He had completed several hours toward a PHD through Oklahoma State University.
While in college, Ron joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard, 45th Division in 1967. He later transferred to the Army Reserves, 95th Division. During his years in the Reserves, he was a Drill Sergeant who trained Army soldiers for combat.
The majority of Ron's teaching career was spent in Hooker, OK where he taught middle school math and science classes to 7-8th graders for over 25 years. He also had occasion to teach at the Alternate School and College Professor levels in Enid, OK. He ended his teaching career in Little Rock, AR where he taught in the Catholic Parochial system and retired from teaching in 2009. Ron and Teri moved to Norman, OK in 2016 after her retirement.
Ron had a passion for his students and being able to be part of their growth and development. Not only in the classroom, but outside of it. This ability to bond with his students, afforded him life-long connections with students and fellow teachers that he continued to value until the end of his life.
Anyone who knew Ron, knew his love for golf. A perfect day for Ron would be playing golf on a major golf course, on a beautiful spring/fall day, with a foursome with his golf buddies or with his brothers.
Ron would want to be remembered for his love of a funny joke, especially if it were on him; as a loyal and loving friend; as a God loving man; as a man who loved his wife, brothers and family; and, as a man, who knew he lived an imperfect life and sought forgiveness for his sins.
He is survived by his wife, Teri Jones Cox; older brother, Bob Cox of Seguin, TX; twin brother, Don Cox (Rita) of Alta Loma, CA; honorary brother, Jerry Emory (Nancy) of Hot Springs, AR; son Gregory Ron Cox (Sherri) of Fredericksburg, VA; Bonus son, Justin Howe (Meaghan)of OKC, OK; five grandchildren; three nephews; and, three great-nephews and on great-niece. He was preceded in death by his parents and one child, Jeffery Don Cox, Gregory's twin.
A visitation for Ron will be held Monday, June 23, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 North Porter Ave, Norman, OK 73071. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at 2:00 PM at First Moore Baptist Church, 301 NE 27th St, Moore, OK 73160.
