Much has been said the last few days about Dad and his impact as an attorney , judge, distinguished member of the community and friend. But to us he was first and foremost our dad. Though the last few weeks have been hard, remembering all the funny and sweet things about Dad have helped ease the pain of his passing.
Dad had a great sense of humor and he told us lots of stories about his childhood. Two of the funniest were that until he was six years old he was a girl and his head had been the same size it was in his adulthood as it had been when he was a child. You can imagine the pictures that ran through our minds!
Dan would wait patiently each evening for Dad to return home from work and would run out the door to great him with “ did you bring me anything?” Dad always had something, maybe a stick of gum or a new joke, but he was never empty handed.
Dad and Laura thought each the funniest person alive. They never lacked for entertainment when they were together, whether it was going to OU football and basketball games or heading down the road for an adventure in Dallas.
He loved participating in sports and played football at the college level but his greatest sporting achievement may have been coaching Dan and Steve’s baseball team, the Lincoln Lions, from cellar dwellers to champions. He always encouraged his sons athletic pursuits. No matter what we pursued as careers, Dad always thought we were the best, the best policeman, store manager, detective, children’s ministry director. He would have loved one of us to follow him into the law, but as long as we were happy, he was happy.
No one had more pride in his grandchildren than Dad. You might have gotten the impression that his first grandchild, Stephen N, was the first grandchild to be created. And as each new grandchild came along, they were as equally loved. He attended all the graduations both near and far. He was looking forward to attending his grandson Zach’s upcoming wedding in San Antonio next fall.
He was the best dad we could have asked for, even when he made us mad. The mad never lasted long and was always followed with lots of hugs , kisses and laughs. We love you Dad, happy trails to you ‘til we meet again.
