Corlys graduated from Chicora High School in 1947 and Rice Business College in 1948. On New Year’s Eve in 1949 she married her high school sweetheart, James Harry Devenny. Selfless Service to her family and to others would characterize her life. She served in her church on multiple committees, as a children’s Sunday school teacher, and as a choir member. At First Baptist Church Mt. Pleasant, she led in the establishment of the Seamen’s Ministry which provided transportation, meals, and fellowship, to the foreign nationals who worked on the ships coming into Charleston’s ports. In 1999, at the age of 69 she participated in a Habitat for Humanity Jimmy Carter Work Project in the Philippines with her daughter, Denise, carrying cement block, cutting rebar, and installing doors.
Corlys was a woman as rare as her name and precious to so many. She leaves an empty place in the hearts of family and friends. In lieu of flowers, Corlys and Harry would be grateful for donations made to Providence Baptist Church at 294 Seven Farms Road, Daniel Island, SC, 29492.
A Memorial Service for Corlys will be held at Providence Church on Saturday, June, 11, 2022 at 3:00 pm. 294 Seven Farms Road, Daniel Island, SC, 29492.
