

Donald Roberts, 86, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday evening, August 16, 2024 at Medical University of South Carolina. Don was born on March 31,1938 in Charleston, SC, the son of John Hilson Roberts and Ena Victoria Seel Roberts.
He delivered newspapers throughout North Charleston morning and evenings while attending high school. He graduated from North Charleston High School and Trident Technical College. He also served in the US Army. Don was employed at Lockhead Aircraft Charleston plant and retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He was an active member of Highland Park Baptist Church and Golden Kingsman Sunday School class. He was a long-time member of the Charleston Artist Guild. Don played with numerous bands beginning with the North Charleston High School marching band, the Charleston Community band and East Cooper Baptist Church orchestra. He was the only remaining founding member of the Hans Schmidt Band Playing his bass saxophone for Oktoberfest events throughout the state and beyond. He was a gifted artist, winning numerous awards. He still loved to paint and play his saxophone, enjoying both the day before he went in the hospital.
Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Joann of 59 years. He had one son, Don Roberts (Brittany) and three beautiful granddaughters, Caroline (17), Lisey (16) and Emily (13) of Isle of Palms, SC. Don is survived by brothers Richard W. Roberts (Linda) of Moncks Corner, SC and Robert E. “Bobby” Roberts (Darlene) of James Island and sisters Gloria Amerson (Bob Raih) of Isle of Palms, Shirley Paige of Hanahan, and Joan Sides of Mt. Pleasant, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and his devoted dog, Cassie.
Don was predeceased by his parents; as well as his oldest brother, John H. Roberts, Jr.; brothers in law, Ralph Sides and Emppie Paige.
The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 PM, Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave. North Charleston, SC 29406. The funeral will be held at Highland Park Baptist Church, 6211 Murray Drive, Hanahan on Thursday morning at 10:30 AM, August 22, 2024.
