Evelyn was born on Sept. 25, 1934 in Bamberg, S.C., the first-born child of William and Frances Groce. Evelyn grew up in Bamberg and Charleston, and enjoyed dancing, the beach and spending time with her sister and three brothers. Her first job was at Edwards Department Store on Reynolds Avenue in North Charleston. She graduated from Chicora High School in 1952.
She met the love of her life, Ernie “Bubba” Worsham, in Bamberg, when Bubba would drive Evelyn and her two cousins to the square dance in Branchville every weekend. The two were married in 1955 and were blessed with three children: Teri, Susan and Ernie (Jr.) Evelyn worked at the Manhattan Shirt Company before embarking on a successful 35-year civil service career as a supervisory computer specialist at Naval Hospital Charleston.
Evelyn’s commitment to her family and to her country through civil service was equaled by her service to the Lord as a long-time member of Portside Baptist Church and later Crowfield Baptist Church. Faith, family, friends and Clemson football made for a lifetime of memories Evelyn’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will treasure for the rest of their days.
Evelyn is survived by her loving husband of 67 years; her children Teri Crosby, Susan Bullinger (Joe) and Ernie Worsham Jr., (Tracy); grandchildren Shannan Eichelberg (Bryan), Leslie Edwards (David), Taylor Piedfort and Maison Piedfort; great-grand children Madison Fuqua, Joey Eichelberg, Ethan Edwards, Raegan Eichelberg and Greer Edwards. She is survived by her sister Linda Bodiford, and brothers George Groce and Harold Groce (Mary). She is predeceased by her parents, her brother James Groce, her son-in-law Dan Crosby, brother-in-law Bill Bodiford and niece Becky Bodiford.
