She was born February 2, 1935, to parents Romana Casiano and Salvador Salcedo in the Province of Pangasinan, Philippines. Orphaned at an early age, she and her siblings, Ricardo, Bayani, Puso, Socorro, and Milagros were raised by their grandmother in Agno, along with several other cousins. Despite the hardships, she always described her childhood as one surrounded by the love of her family, who provided everything possible for such a large group of children. This set the tone for her life to follow as one of love, laughter, compassion, and service to others.
In October 1950, Misterio married the love of her life, Greg Peralta, as she fondly described as the handsome young man on a horse. Greg had joined the United States Navy in the Philippines shortly after World War II and from there, they set out to create a beautiful life together. Their family grew to include four children while traveling to Navy assignments in Hawaii, Guam, California, Florida, Virginia, and finally Charleston. At each duty station, Misterio created a life of adventure and magic for her four children, who all grew to love the water as much as their parents.
Whether by necessity or nature, Misterio was always extremely resourceful. She was a masterful seamstress, creating clothes, communion linens, embroidered church banners, prom dresses, and even expertly replacing upholstery on couches. Her gardens were always plentiful with vegetables and flowers, and she enjoyed serving delicious traditional Filipino food to her family as well as the large network of community. A woman of deep faith, she was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church for more than 50 years, as well as a member of The Order of the Daughters of the King.
Misterio was fondly known as Terry, Mom, Gama, and Nona. With the birth of her first grandchild in 1985, Misterio declared she was going to be the best grandmother ever, which she easily accomplished with her seven grandchildren. This legacy continued with her four great grandchildren who adoringly called her Nona. Her sweet caring nature, a smile that made her eyes sparkle, and a musical voice were always present, but even more so when she was caring for her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Misterio was predeceased by three siblings, Ricardo, Bayani, and Puso; her son, David Peralta; son-in-law, Brad Edler; and her granddaughter, Darryl Peralta.
She is survived by daughters, Christine Thompson (Steve) and Cathy Edler; daughter in law, Pennie Peralta; son, Greg Peralta (Amy), grandchildren, Jessica Burke (Sean), Amee Moss (Andrew), Elliott Peralta (Heather), Conrad Edler, Maddie Peralta; as well as great grandchildren Josie, Jacob, Matthew, and Emily.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1150 E Montague Ave, North Charleston, SC 29405.
A graveside service will follow at Carolina Funeral Home and Gardens, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406. There will be a reception in the St. Thomas Parish Hall following the graveside services.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
