My earliest memories of grandpa are working in the garden pulling weeds and clearing the brush outside the property alongside the train tracks. As a teenager I cleared brush at his business and assisted with various jobs. It was a great way to focus the energy of youth in the hot Carolina summers. He was a very level headed man and always had a knowing smirk. He will be missed.

Expressing sympathy in the loss of your father. We remember him for his help to our father and mother Clarence and Sara Kemmerlin who lived across the street from him and your mother on Parkside Dr. some 20 years ago. He was always very kind and willing to help them and even gave things to them, an exercise bike for one which Dad used for years and helped to keep him in shape as he grew older. God Bless you and the family.

Mr. Hawkins and his family were great neighbors to my parents and I in North Charleston. What a great neighbor that surely will be missed

We used to visit with Dick at Church. Wayne also went to ROMEOS with him and many other Park Circle Pres. men. He was always ready with a smile or greeting. He'd listen to our stories and could tell many an interesting one of his own from growing up to the USN to North Charleston life. We are so sad for the Family and for all of us who have lost this wonderful friend! Much care and prayer extended to the Hawkins Families. Wayne and Dawn Smith 

Richard has been part of the Leatherwood family since 1994 and only retired in December 2017. He has been a dear friend to me since early 1970s.  He was project manager when we built the Leatherwood Business Park and managed it after construction was complete.  He would walk, and later ride his golf cart, around and visit the tenants.  He was loved by all. We continued to have lunch weekly or bi-weekly after his retirement. Cod Fathers was his favorite but even at Burger King he always asked for the senior discount.  I was pleased to hear he will have a military service because  there couldn't be anyone more deserving. He was honorable, caring and loved his country.  He didn't meet a stranger and he and Bertie celebrated several anniversaries at Leatherwood Manufacturing while sharing burgers and hotdogs for the entire staff just because he liked doing for others.
Our entire staff and family will miss him greatly and send our sympathy to his family.


I want to extend my sympathies to Rick and Raymond. I have fond memories of visiting with Uncle Dick and Aunt Roberta at their Charleston home. I enjoyed listening to stories of Uncle Dick's inventions and him playing his organ. He was so talented and gracious in sharing his musical ability with his church.
I wish peace and comfort to your families.

We will miss our wonderful chats with a very remarkable  and skilled person.  Dick and his deceased wife were so dedicated to each other and to their sons Ricky and Ray.  Our love and condolence to  them.  Paul and Jane Campbell
