

Born Winnifred Shirley Hudson-Vassell on February 9, 1941 to Cyril and Linette Vassell in Kingston, Jamaica.
Winnifred attended Excelsior High School and post-secondary education in Kingston, Jamaica. She then met the love of her life, Julio Forbes in 1954, and the two were married in May of 1964 while residing in Jamaica. She spent 48 years working as a chemist as her primary career. They became parents when they had their three children: Wayne, Nicole, and Nadine between the years of 1966 and 1968. In 1978 they migrated to the Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. They also relocated to Kalamazoo MI, Lima OH, Miami FL, and lastly made their home in Summerville, SC.
Passions of hers included gardening indoors and outdoors, as well as tropical landscaping. She was exceptionally dedicated to caring for her magnificent orchids. Other hobbies she loved included, playing tennis, crocheting. Winnifred was an active member of Lady of Lourdes Parish in Miami (Kendall) Florida, with leadership in the Divine Will, Perpetual Adoration, and other ministries associated with the church. She also served as an Eucharistic minister for the church.
Winnifred is preceded in death by her parents, Cyril and Linette Vassell, her sister Grace Vassell, brother Trevor Vassell and George Vassell.
She is survived by her adoring husband, of 58 years, Julio Forbes; brother, Waldo (Noleen) Wellington, Cyril Jr. (Linette), and Emerson; her son Wayne Lincoln Forbes (Candace); daughters, Nicole Simone Forbes-Schmitt (Paul), and Nadine Andrea Forbes-McBean (Melissa); granddaughters Paula Grace Schmitt and Kayla De St. Germain.
A celebration of life service will be held in the Chapel of Carolina Memorial Funeral Home on Saturday January 14, 2023 at 11:00AM, with the burial to follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens.
