Grant Alexander Nelson, age 37, born September 30, 1986, in West Hills, California, passed away peacefully at his home on August 7, 2024, with his beloved wife by his side, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Grant's parents' presence during his transition was a great comfort to him and his wife, Natalie.
He was a devoted husband to Natalie, demonstrating his love through countless thoughtful gestures. During challenging times, Grant stood by her side, offering unwavering emotional support and encouragement. Grant was a loving father to their sons Ryker and Walter. He dedicated meaningful time to them, engaging in activities they enjoyed, from playing games and reading together to going on family outings. Through his loving actions for his boys, he offered emotional support and reassurance and set a positive example by demonstrating values such as honesty, respect, and hard work. Grant prioritized spending quality time with Natalie, Ryker, and Walter. For his family, he provided guidance through challenges, established family traditions, and expressed his love and affection consistently, showing that his care and support were steadfast.
While growing up, Grant had a kind, loving, and spirited nature, always seeking new challenges and adventures with family and friends when not in school. His days were packed with activities, from perfecting skateboarding tricks with his friends at the local park to casting a line into serene lakes while fishing with his mom, sister, and Grandpa Hartman or friends. The thrill of shooting targets at the range sharpened his focus and gave him a deep sense of accomplishment. He looked forward to weekends spent at the range with his dad, grandpa, sister, and mom. On vacation, nights were spent under the stars camping with his family, "Auntie Crystal," Nina, and Christopher all over the western United States, offering a peaceful counterpoint to his high-energy pursuits. True to his Norse Heritage, you could always find him tending to the fire. Grant also adored his pets, including his loyal dogs Max, Melody, and Stella; his affectionate cats Sugar and Princess; and his fascinating iguana, Artie. In high school, he further honed his discipline and leadership skills as a dedicated member of the NJROTC. Each hobby he embraced was more than just a pastime; it was a way to explore the world and push his boundaries, making Grant a boy who truly lived life on the edge of excitement.
After attending college, Grant built a career in warehouse management, continually expanding his knowledge and skills. He was known for his hardworking nature, dedication to self-improvement, and his sustained support for his family. His generous spirit and kind heart made a lasting impression on all who knew him. His profound love for nature, history, and exploration complemented his passion for conservation and civil rights. His varied interests included automotive technology, blacksmithing, woodworking, horticulture, and video gaming with loved ones. Grant’s curiosity and eagerness to learn were hallmarks of his character. He also shared a deep connection with his best friends Steve and Gloria, who were a significant part of his life, often joining him in his favorite activities and supporting him through his challenges.
A practicing Norse pagan, Grant held his spiritual beliefs close to his heart. In the Hávamál, an ancient Norse text from the Poetic Edda, virtues such as courage, truth, honor, and loyalty are celebrated as fundamental pillars of a noble character. Courage is lauded as essential for facing life's trials with steadfastness, while truth and honor are upheld as guiding principles for personal integrity and reputation. Loyalty binds individuals to their kin and oaths, underscoring the importance of reliability and trust. Discipline is portrayed as a necessary trait for self-mastery and achieving one's goals, while hospitality reflects the value placed on generosity and social bonds. Self-reliance and industriousness are emphasized as critical for personal success and survival, highlighting the Norse ideal of independence and hard work. Perseverance ties all these virtues together, urging individuals to remain resolute in the face of adversity, embodying the spirit of enduring through life's challenges with unfaltering strength. Grant’s life reflected these values, and he lived with a deep respect for these ancient ideals.
Grant was preceded in death by his grandparents Clifford and Loretta; Delbert and Joan; Ralph and Marcia; his uncle Spencer; his great-uncles Manuel and Mayo; his great-aunts Lucille and Marian; and his cousins Gary and Sharon. He is survived by his wife, Natalie; children Ryker and Walter; mother, Catherine; father, Kenton; mother-in-law, Laura; father-in-law, Steven; sister, Stephanie (Sean); and brothers, Andrew (Kathryn), Wesley (Amanda), and Raymond (Bridget); nieces Allyson, Sunshine, Delaney, and Delilah; nephews Jacob, Tucker, and Mike; uncles Terry and Neil (Sally); and aunt Pam. Grant will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the City of Hope. There will be no formal service, but a celebration of Grant's life will take place in the future.
