Meredith Ameretta Corley, widow of the late Archie W. Douglas, was born on April 13, 1913 in Columbia, SC. She was the fourth child out of seven siblings, the youngest daughter of William Henry Corley and Daisy James Prelogue Corley. She passed away on September 18, 2012 at California Rehabilitation Center, Van Nuys, CA.
Meredith attended Benedict College where she majored in Drama and the Arts. She appeared in a number of plays while there and had several lead roles. Her favorite lead role in which she sang and acted was in a play called “Kicked Out of College”.
She was an accomplished singer and loved all kinds of music, especially opera. Other hobbies included dancing, playing the guitar, drawing, painting, and sewing.
She met and married Archie Douglas, who was a transfer student from South Carolina State College to Benedict College. She became the mother of three children and devoted her entire life to raising her family in a stable, religious, happy home with good family values. She wanted to be sure that her children experienced the benefits of music, so there were endless voice, piano, clarinet, saxophone, and guitar lessons. She succeeded because all of her children possess musical talents.
She was the best mother anyone could wish for. At times, she did without so her children could go to college and succeed in life’s challenges.
We will miss her kindness, generosity, strong will, talents and loving spirit.
She is survived by her children, A. William Douglas, Jr., (Diane), Sonja Melville, (Scott) and Ronald Douglas and six Grandchildren. They are SonjaLisa, Scott and Douglas Melville, Megan Hellyer, Matthew Douglas and Chante Hardesty.
Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, but love leaves a memory that no one can steal. Meredith will enter God’s heavenly home. All the cares and sorrows of this life are over and she will be safely in God’s presence forever and will know only peace and joy.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the dedicated staff at California Rehabilitation Center for their compassionate and competent care. A special thank-you to Dr. Shaw for being her personal physician.
