She adored her parents, older sister Eileen, and older brother Irv. They were a very close Jewish family, and included extended family, such as the Books, Nemeths, and Shapiros. The families, especially the Hammers, Books, and Weisers celebrated the Jewish holidays together.
Barbara became a leg model in her teens, and later a phenomenal bookkeeper. She loved to dance, play cards, gamble, and have fun, but family always came first.
She met the love of her life Oscar when her brother brought him home to meet her after the Korean war. They spent most of their lives together, 70 years, married for 68. They raised five children, Marcia, Samuel, Sheryl, Francine and Michael. They moved from New York to Miami Florida in 1959.
The significant others of her children also became family, Debbie, Angie, Melinda, and Debby. She has five grandchildren Daniel, Joseph, Anna, Joshua, and Zachary. She kept a traditional Jewish home, celebrating all the Jewish holidays with family gatherings. She loved clothes and shopping was her favorite hobby. She loved to cruise, and for over two decades went on a holiday Thanksgiving cruise with the family.
She was the strongest, most fearless woman, who loved her family and others dearly, and they loved her. She made friends everywhere she went. Barbara was deeply loved and will be forever missed, and will be remembered as a woman of valor, matriarch and leader of the family. We are happy she is at peace and with the parents she adored and others she loved that passed before her.
May her memory be a blessing.
A funeral service will be held at Star of David Memorial Chapel, located at 7701 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, FL 33068, United States. The service is scheduled for February 2, 2025, starting at 2:45 pm.
