On behalf of the Davis family in Jamaica we would like to send condolences to the family of Iris Davis. She was a wonderful, loving, kind and caring sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She will be sadly missed but her memories will live on.

In my early years I had a pronounced and distinct lisp. Almost everybody called Auntie by either Miss Dee or Miss Iris and if you had a lisp like I had both of those names could be a bit challenging. Aunty told me the minute I stopped the thumb sucking my lisp would disappear and I would be able to drop big speeches like Michael Manley and Edward Seaga. Until then, just call her Auntie. 

I was Auntie's baby. She made sure there was never any doubts about that my whole entire life. As an adult I learned that was just her way. Auntie was able to make everybody she encountered feel special. All wool is not the same wool. All cloth is not the same cloth. She taught me that a person should never ever be afraid to start life over. She successfully did it herself many times. If it was by choice or not nobody would/should ever know. Auntie departing this earth after such a long and beautiful life of REALLY living to me is just another start for her. I will Miss you Auntie. Travel well.

Iris Davis affectionately called Aunty was my grand aunt. I grew up with my Aunty and Mom together in the earlier years of my life. I remember my aunt as being very classy. She always had the best products for body care. She never left out her Jean Nate. When going out she always put on her make up and jewelry and looked well styled in her outfits. 
My aunt was a seamstress for many years. She had a vast amount of loyal customers who also became family friends. I remember I had a church event to attend when I was about seven or eight years old and my aunt taught me how to sew the cutest little outfit to wear. It was those same skills that she instilled in me that had me using my lunch money to buy and sew fabric when I was in high school. 
I remember my aunty as a mango lover. She loved her blackie and hairy mangoes so much. You could always catch her eating them in the dark. I asked her one day why she eats them in the dark and she said that way I don’t see if any worm in it. 
My Aunty was such a kind soul to humans and pets alike. I can’t forget her black cat that would eat only the finest sprat fish that she would buy at the market to fatten him up. 
You are missed my dear Aunty. I am comforted by the fact that you got to live a long life. We love you Aunty. Sleep in peace.

The Hope of Heaven
An original poem written in honour of my grandaunt
                                               Iris May Davis

Auntie's life was a testimony
She served Christ with her whole heart
Today we celebrate her life's story
Because of the hope of heaven

Life has many winding roads
Things we do not understand
But in the everlasting arms of our Saviour 
We can find the grace to stand
Because of the hope of heaven

Christ gave us His promise of heavenly mansions
Auntie's resting place
Today we send her ahead with sweet assurance
Because of the hope of heaven

This hope we have like an anchor for the soul
Steadfast, sure, secure
And Christ said, "I go to prepare a place for you
That where I am there ye may be also"

As grandniece and grandnephew, Wayne and I looked forward to visiting Auntie at every opportunity. Mama (Mrs. Eva Williams) would send my brother (Wayne) and me to visit Auntie and Lucille during our school breaks. When Auntie resided in Meadowbrook, we would take the bus to downtown Kingston and ride the escalator to visit her boutique. As “country bumpkins” living in Claremont, St. Ann, we were excited to experience “town life.” When Auntie moved to 14 Eastwood Park Road, we enjoyed walking to the shopping center that was close by her home. I remember how terrified we were while playing in the yard because we would often see large colorful lizards running on the ground. This would cause us to run, hop, jump, and squeal as we raced to the back of the property, where we would visit our friend, who made cement blocks for a company. After working long hours, Auntie was sure to spend quality time with us. She would talk to us about things that interest us, or the programs we were watching on television. When Wayne and I migrated to New York, we were sure to visit Auntie upon every return to Jamaica. Auntie is one of the best aunts in the world. Auntie, we love you, and we will miss you dearly!!

Iris May was born on November 21, 1926, in Red Hill, St. Ann to Samuel Davis and Gertrude Davis formerly Edwards. She was the third child for Samuel and Gertude Davis, who had ten other children—Kenneth (1922), Ansell Hambert (Albert--1924), Lilian (1928), Stanley Lloyd (Winston/Wes--1930), Icilda (1932), Cleveland (Lukie/Evans—1934)), Ireta (1937), Baroney (Cee--1939), Alfred (1941), and Ruby (Loudie/Doudie--1943). Many of Iris’ siblings had nicknames, and it is difficult to affiliate the nicknames to the registered names. For example, Ansell was called “Barry” according to his daughter, Freda Davis-Roye, who lives in England, and Cleveland was called Lukie, according to his son Winston, who also resides in England. While many of Iris’s siblings migrated to England, several of them remained in Jamaica. In addition, Iris had three other sisters, whose father was Samuel Davis and mother was Sarah Brown—Imogene Davis-Sinclair (1914-1981), Ionie Davis (1919-1976), and Eva Davis-Williams (1920-2005). I first met my cousin, Iris in 1964. I was always fascinated by her gift of designing a simple piece of fabric to fit any size and shape.  You name it she made it. She set to work transforming me into a fashionista with her exquisite designs. I reflect on her heart of unselfish devotion-always thinking of others and their needs.  She was the family historian who never missed an opportunity to give a history lesson on our family tree.  Rest my dear cousin until the trumpet sounds.
